I've changed the classes in my campaign A LOT. I've designed a new class-system, although still (partially) based on the classic rules:
I have cut Character Advancement in two parts. You choose a basic class when you're first level and you start adventuring as you used to be.
When you reach level 5, you have sufficiently mastered your basic class and promotion to a more specific class becomes possible. It won't just happen, though. You have to choose when (or if) you want to promote your character to a specific class and even when you have decided, your character has got to accomplish certain things to actually become such a class.
Down here are the basic classes you can choose, when you click on them, you will be brought to a class specific page: (Warrior,Scout and Thief pages are running at the moment...)
The basic classes:
The Warrior
The Scout
The Thief
The Adventurer
The Priest
The Arcanist (includes all types of magic-users)
