ACTIONS- 1999
January WAPHA representative participated in the Feminist Majority
Foundation Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan. She and other
Afghan women spoke against the Taliban brutal human rights violation
Afghanistan, in a video called "Shroud of Silence: Gender Apartheid in
Afghanistan."
February 18-66, 1999 WAPHA representative worked with Women Caucus for
Gender Justice and the Coalition of NGO for the formation of the
International Criminal Court Preparatory Commission (Prep. Com) at the
United Nation, New York.
March 5-6, 1999 Shorish-Shamley participated and presented a paper at
The International Women's Human Rights Conference, Vanguard University,
Middle East Studies Center, Costa Mesa, CA. She was awarded the 1999
Humanitarian Award, by the Middle East Studies Center. She received a
commendation for her humanitarian work from the Feminist Majority Foundation
in March 1999.
March 8-12 WAPHA representative attended Commission on the Status of
Women (CSW) Meetings at the United Nations, New York. On March 9, 1999 WAPHA
organized a panel at the CSW meetings. At the panel Afghan women from various
Afghan NGOs present papers on the predicament of the Afghan women both inside
Afghanistan and in the refugee camps in Pakistan. Some of the papers
discussed the human rights violations of women and children and men under the
Taliban rule. Other papers gave reports on the health status of the Afghan
people, with a focus on the health of women and children.
March 29, 1999, Shorish-Shamley spoke at an Event in Hollywood where
many of the Hollywood's famous stars participated and spoke against the
Taliban’s gender apartheid policies in Afghanistan. The Feminist
Majority had organized the Event, as part of the Campaign to Stop Gender
Apartheid in Afghanistan.
April 8-9 WAPHA representative attended a conference at Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM). On April 9,1999 Dr. Shorish-Shamley
was the keynote speaker and presented a paper on the horrendous health status
of Afghan women, men and children under the Taliban’s rule. She received a
recognition and Appreciation Award from the KCOM.
April 14, 1999, WAPHA representative attended a Senate Hearing on the
Afghan Crisis, the United Sates Senate, Washington, DC.
April 22-23, 1999 WAPHA representative participated in a conference at
the University of Colorado-Boulder. She was the keynote speaker and presented
a paper on human rights violations in Afghanistan.
April 28, 1999, WAPHA representative presented a paper to the National
Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of
Medicine, Washington, DC. The paper addressed issues such as: health crisis
in Afghanistan with a focus on the health of women and children; persecution
and prosecution of the medical care professionals, scientists, artists,
writers and other intelligencia under the Taliban’s rule.
May 6, 1999, WAPHA representative and Feminist Majority Foundation’s
representatives met with Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, Under Secretary-General and
special envoy of the Secretary General to Afghanistan. The issue of
violations of the human rights of Afghan women and girls, was the focus of
the discussion in the meeting. WAPHA’s representative presented the Special
Envoy with a peace proposal for possible solution to the Afghan conflict. The
peace proposal was researched and prepared by Dr. Zieba Shorish-Shamley and
Ms. Hawa Ghaus. The Proposal incorporated views of various Afghan scholars
and experts in exile.
May 10-16, 1999 WAPHA’s Representative attended the conference, Hague
Appeal for Peace 1999, the Netherlands
May 11, 1999- Panel at The Hague. Women's Alliance for Peace and Human
Rights in Afghanistan and Feminist Majority Foundation Campaign to End Gender
Apartheid in Afghanistan Presented A panel: The New Millennium Gift to the
Afghan Women: War, Oppression and Gender Apartheid.
May 13, 1999 5: 30 PM-9: 00 PM, Hague Appeal for Peace
1999, The Netherlands WAPHA representative spoke at a panel entitled
"Information and Communication tools for Promoting Women’s
Human Rights in Conflict Situations." The panel was organized by UNIFEM.
May 17, 1999, WAPHA’s representative Dr. Shorish-Shamley traveled to
Germany to do grassroots Human Rights awareness on the plight of the Afghan
women and girls and the Afghan people under the Taliban’s rule. However, from
May 17-to September 2, 1999 Dr. Shorish-Shamley got involved in helping her
niece Maryam Shams who had escaped from the Taliban to Germany. With the help
of Feminist Majority Foundation, the Tahirih Justice Center, hundreds of
other organizations and individuals, some of the members of the United States
Congress, the White House, the State Department and the INS, Maryam Shams
and Dr. Shorish-Shamley were able to arrive to the United States on September
2, 1999.
WAPHA also helped bring two other refugees from Pakistan. The two men’s
lives were in danger from the Taliban militia. They had been active against
the militia inside Afghanistan. The Taliban discovered their activities and
they had to escape to Pakistan. They asked WAPHA for help in October, 1998.
They reached safely the United States in July, 1999.
September 28, 1999 WAPHA representatives attended a conference organized
by the Afghanistan Foundation, Washington, DC.
October 1-2 WAPHA representative attended the Ninth Annual Women’s
Studies Conference "Global Justice/Women’s Rights" at the Southern
Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT. Dr. Shorish-Shamley was one of
the keynote speakers at the conference. She presented a paper on the Afghan
women, men and children human rights violations by the Taliban militia.
October 18, 1999 WAPHA representatives spoke at New York City,
West Hotel. There were about 300 celebrities from the film, theater, and
music and media industries joined women and human rights advocates to push
for the restoration of the basic rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
The star-studded event, co-hosted by the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF)
and Glamour magazine, and chaired by Jay's dedicated wife, Mavis Leno. Among
the stars that attended the event were famous stars such as Meryl Streep,
Marlo Thomas, Joan Osborne, Melissa Etheridge, Jessica Tivens's, Jane
Meadows, Steve Allen, Al Franken, Laura Dern and others.
November 3, 1999 WAPHA representative attended "Capital Hill Policymakers
Forum" organized by The Afghanistan Foundation and Afghans for Civil Society.
The featured speaker was Dr. Kamal Hossian, the Special Rapporteur of the
United Nations Commission on Human Rights to Afghanistan.
November 3, 1999, from 1: 15PM to 3: 00 PM, WAPHA representative and
representatives from other Afghan women organizations met with Dr. Kamal
Hossian concerning the Afghan people’s human rights violations by the
Taliban. The meetings special focus was on the rights of Afghan women and
children.
November 15, 1999 WAPHA representative attended a conference organized
Global Health Council, Washington, DC.
November 17-20 Shorish-Shamley attended the American Anthropological
Association Annual Meetings, Chicago, Illinois. On 11/19/99 Shorish-Shamley
presented a paper entitled " The United Nations’ Charters on Women’s Human
Rights and the Problem s of Implementation: Afghanistan, A Case Study" at an
invited session "Cultural Struggle For Women’s Human Rights," organized by
the Association for Feminist Anthropology.
November 29, 1999 to December 17, 1999 WAPHA representative worked with
Women Caucus for Gender Justice and the Coalition of NGO at the International
Criminal Court Preparatory Commission (Prep. Com) at the United Nation, New
York.
