(Division)

Materials:
drum

music

(For large groups of children)

What to do

  • describe the imaginary scene: the jungle

  • children select a wild animal to dramatize

  • select "jungle" type music to play in the background

  • play the music then turn it off and sound a drum (5)* times

  • "animals" are safe in groups of (5)*; the remainder go into a holding pen at the side

Guiding:

  • how many children are playing?

  • when the music stopped, how many groups of (5)* are there? how many remain?

Transferring

  • transfer to numerical equation (23 divided by 5 = 4 with 3 remaining

  • create word problems to practice the concept once understood

Expanding

  • encourage varied types of movement (force, height, in partners etc)

  • change the setting; change the music; change the interpretations

  • give each child a letter, and form words on the sound of the drum

  • give each child a word and form sentences on the sound of the drum
