Building Math Concepts: Smartie Colours

(Patterns)
(Cause and Effect)

Materials:
eye dropper
Smarties* 
     (coloured candies)
paper towel

have available: 
measuring tools
observation tools

 

What to do

  • place Smarties* of different colours onto a blotting paper or paper towel

  • using eye dropper, place drops of water onto a Smartie* until colours run onto paper

Guiding: 

  • what do you expect to happen?

  • what do you see?

  • make predictions for other coloured Smarties* based on what you know

  • test your predictions

  • how is the reaction different with different colours?

Transferring

  • make a drawing on a paper towel using waterbased markers

  • predict what will happen when water is added 

  • test predictions

  • how is this similar to the Smarties* activity?

Expanding
