The elders are a good example of how the Emishi's clan is turning out: it's growing old. This group of old men is normally reunited when important things are to be discussed.

The elders' presence was requested after Ashitaka faced the cursed boar god and killed him. After they saw the curse's mark at the arm of their young prince they simply stood there looking horrified at how the gods were against them.

The clan of the Emishi people was once persecuted by the emperor and had to hide far at the west of the island. They had hardly survived during all those years and in the moment they saw Ashitaka cutting his hair they understood they were extinct: their last prince was dead for all them.
