When Darren was 14 he got his ear pierced. His dad was really upset. However, he knew the way to change Darren's behavior was through bribery rather than punishment. So he told Darren that if he would take the earring out he would get him a new bike for Christmas. And if he stayed out of trouble and got good grades, he would take him to Europe between his junior and senior year. So it came to pass that the time was finally here. Darren's dad had to quit his job to take the 2-3 months off. Now remember, Darren's dad and I had been divorced since Darren was a year old. So this was time that would be a real bonding experience for them. They spent 2 1/2 months and toured 14 countries, camping, sleeping on trains and in cheap hotels. It was when they were camping in Greece that Darren wrote the poem that's in my book. They really got to know one another. Kurt finds so much comfort in those memories. |
