BORN IN 1968 - TIE DYE WAS IN HIS BLOOD
You're listening to "TRUCKIN" by the Grateful Dead. Of course, not a true hippie but he liked the music. And he loved his camper bus. It was the proper transportation. Darren was a "Deadhead" and was probably most excited when Jerry Garcia joined him in heaven. Shortly after Darren died, the Grateful Dead were going to do a concert in Las Vegas (a reasonable drive from Tucson) and I knew he would have been there for sure if he were still alive. A young attorney I worked with was planning on going, as was the "flower child" file girl. Tom told me that Darren would certainly be there and he'd be in the front row. I could have kissed him! For him to bring up Darren was marvelous and also as I tried to explain to a friend, that even after our children leave this earth we can still believe that their adventures continue. So, besides memories, there are new stories to tell, too.

THE BUS IS LOADED AND OFF TO THE U of A

Darren served two years in the Army after high school in Portland, Oregon in order to get the New Army College Fund. So, when he went off to college in Tucson, Arizona, he was a little older than most. Darren was born in Tucson, but we moved when he was 14 months old. He had a friend in the Army who was from Phoenix and together they decided to go to the U of A. I got all of his transcripts and test scores to send off. None of which were really good enough to go to an out of state school. Darren, however, wrote the best letter to the admissions office while he was stationed in Germany. He explained how two years in the Army had taught him responsibility and now he was ready to apply himself academically. It worked! I tacked the acceptance notice to the door when he came home.

CAT IN THE HAT HIS LAST HALLOWEEN

Next to Christmas, Darren's favorite holiday was Halloween. We try not to forget that with cemetery decorations. Here is Darren at twelve on another Halloween. Like yours, I am sure, most of the photos are in costumes and you can't see the child.

Did we start it all when we dressed him up for a "hippie" birthday party when he was 6 months old?
