While in Merida, I decided to take a ride on the highest (over 2 miles) and longest (about 7 miles) cable car in the world. There are four legs to the summit of Pico Espejo (4,765 metres). The trip takes about three hours but it doesn't appear to take that long. You must take it slow when on top because there is very little oxygen at that altitude. On the way down I had the opportunity of seeing Merida and many of the other peaks. . |
The Teleferico as it is called in Merida was built by the French in 1958. When you reach the summit, it can be very cold. There was snow when I went. There are four segments to the top. The first station is BARINITAS, the second, LA MONTAŅA, the third, LA AQUADA, and the fourth, LOMA REDONDA. The ultimate stop is Pico Espejo. |
