Descendants of Johann or Friedrich Frederick Steigerwalt

Second Generation

2. Johannes Steigerwalt (Johann or Friedrich Frederick ) was born on 10 Dec 1758 in Floersbach, Hessen, Hanau, Germany.

Johannes arrived with his father in Philadelphia Oct 26, 1767 on the ship Brittania. He migrated west to Fort Wayne, Indiana. His great, great grandson was John L. Steigerwald, born January 8, 1866 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, died March 1942.

Johannes married Maria Elizabeth Lutz in , , Pa.

They had the following children:

9 F i Anna Catherina Steigerwalt was born on 13 Jun 1773. She was christened on 27 Jun 1773 in Albany Twp, Berks, Pa, JerusalemRedChur.
+ 10 M ii Steigerwald.

3. Carl or Charles Otto Steigerwalt (Johann or Friedrich Frederick ) was born on 6 May 1760 in Floersbach, Hessen, Hanau, Germany. He was christened on 7 May 1760 in Floersbach, Hessen, Hanau, Germany. He died in 1822 in Andreas, Schuylkill, Pa.

Carl came to America at the age of seven with his parents. In January, 1768 he became an "indentured" servant of Peter Dungal of neighboring Greenwich Township, Berks County. It is said that he became "bound" for expenses his father had incurred to bring the family across the ocean to America. The agreement was to end after twelve years and four months or in May, 1780 when Carl Otto would be twenty years old. Upon release, Mr. Dungal was obligated to give Carl Otto a suit of homespun cloth, a pair of shoes and stockings. The following year, Carl Otto enlisted in the Revolutionary forces against the English crown. He was a private in Captain Daniel Will's Company of Berks County militia from May 28, 1781 to July 31, 1781.
Carl, in partnership with his brother Andrew bought a parcel of land from Josiah Thomas and his wife Hannah, on April 6, 1794. This tract was in East Penn Township, then Northampton County (presently Carbon County), which was on the north side of the Blue Mountain and northeast of Albany Twp., on and below the southern slopes of the mountain. This land is along the Lizard Creek, and there is a story of the Steigerwalt men sleeping in the desolate woods while building a house. On December 1, 1797, Andrew sold his share to Carl. From 1794 to 1797, Carl Otto was on the building committee of the Ben Salem Union Church. The original church, a log building, was erected during this time.
About 1785 Carl married Gertraudt. Presumably she was from Albany Township and her parents are unknown. While living in Greenwich Township, Carl Otto and Gertraudt attended the New Bethel Church of that township. Carl's children: John settled in Albany Township, Berks County, and was a weaver by trade. Magdalene was married to Frederick Schneider of Lynn Township, and died before 1828. Frederick stayed on the homestead and married Maria Hettler, one of the neighbor's daughters. Susannah was married to John Rehrig, son of Conrad D., one of the neighbors. Jacob was married to Elizabeth Rehrig. Elizabeth Steigerwalt was married to Isaac Miller. Henry, the youngest of the children was married and moved to Ohio after 1828.
Gertraudt outlived her husband by thirty years. In the year 1819, Carl Otto had built a stone barn, 40 x 60 feet, with 18 feet from basement to eaves. A few years later he died and Frederick, one of his sons, bought a part of the tract from the heirs. There were two indentures calling for the same number of acres. One was dated 1824 calling for 77 acres, 67 perches, consideration $1040. The second dated 1828 calling for 77 acres, 67 perches, consideration $617. On August 10, 1838, he bought a tract of land lying along the east side of his farm containing 135 acres for the sum of $628 from George Freyman. In 1847 he bought another strip, on the west side of his farm, containing 23 acres, from Jonas Andreas for $23.

Carl married Gertraudt Alspach about 1785. Gertraudt was born in 1763. She died in Apr 1852.

On May 4, 1852, the goods of Gertraudt's estate were sold. Son Frederich bought a hefer, stove and pipes, needles and scarfs. Grandson Charles, bought bedding and linens. Another grandson, Gideon Nothstein, also bought linens, baskets, tubs, etc. Other relatives and friends bought cloth, books, iron kettles and pots, a two-hour clock, kitchen items and dishes, and a cow. Presumably, Gertraudt is buried with her husband, but there is no gravestone.

Line 58 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long:
NAME Johann Petrus or Peter /STEIGERWALT/

Better known as Peter. Arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Oct 26 1767 on ship Brittania with parents and three brothers. Birth and baptismal record says: "In dem DorfFloersbach, in dem gabied Hanau in Europe,". He was baptized by the Rev. Reitz of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Furschbach. Sponsers were Peter Kunckel and his wife. According to a family record he was confirmed in the Allengeter Kirche" (All Saints Church) in Berks County on April 15, 1776. In 1781 he served with his brother Carl in the Revolutionary War in Captain Jacob Ladich's Co; Colonel Ely's Battallion of the Berks County Militia. He served until the surrender at Yorktown in 1781. There is a second record naming Peter as a Private in Company 6, 1st Battalion, Northampton County Militia in 1785 under the command of Lt. Col. Michael Brobst. A bronze memorial has been erected on the site of his grave by the Steigerwalt descendents. Sometime after his marriage to Maria, they migrated over into Schuylkill County, settling at the present site of Andreas. Tradition says they erectd a temporary shelter under a spreading oak near the Lizard Creek until a log house could be built. On October 27, 1794, J. Peter Steigerwalt purchased 321 acres of land from the estate of Abel James for the sum of 65 pounds, the annual interest to be paid in like money on the 27th of November of each year.
He also purchased 59 acres from John Handwerk. Altogether there were four tracts: the 321 acres from the Abel James estate; another of 59 acres from the aforesaid John Handwerk, then 4 acres and 121 acres, a total of more than 500 acres. The 59 acres and 149 acres of the Abel James estate were later transferred to his second youngest son, Joseph, who built the present brick colonial type farm house near the site of the original log house, on the edge of what is now the village of Andreas, Pa. A second part of the tract was transferred to Solomon, third youngest son, who built a house on the east side of the tract. A third part of the tract was transferred to Joel, youngest of the eleven children of J. Peter Steigerwalt and his wife Maria Christina. Joel built a house and established a farm house on the west side of the original tract near Andreas. The remaining eight children received grants of money as their part of the inheritance. Served as a trustee of Ben Salem Church.

Johann married Maria Christina Hollenbach on 8 Sep 1785. Maria was born on 4 Jan 1760 in Greenwich Twp, Berks, Pa. She was christened on 1 Jun 1766 in Greenwich Twp, Berks, Pa, NewBethelZionChr. She died on 30 Nov 1855 in East Penn Twp, Carbon, Pa. She was buried on 2 Dec 1855 in East Penn Twp, Carbon, Pa, Ben Salem Cem.

There are several dates of birth for Maria Christina, 1760, Jan 4 1766, and Jan 5 1766. There are also two dates of death, Sept 10 1855, and Nov 3 1855. However, a letter dated Aug 5 1992 from Joan A. Meyers contains her transcript of burial records of Rev. E. A. Bauer, from the originals in his handwriting on file at the Lehigh County Historical Society: Christine Steigerwald - wife of Peter Steigerwald - died Nov 30 1855 - buried Dec 2 1855 - died East Penn - buried East Penn - age 95-10-26 - born Greenwich Twp., Berks Co. Jan 4 1760. Rev. Bauer's death date agrees with the newspaper notice. Meyers suggests that her tombstone may have been erected several years after her death, and the cemetery copied its record from the tombstone. She notes that Rev. E.A. Bauer's records appear careful and detailed.
Obituary: Above Meyers indicates that "Der Friedens-Bote", Allentown newspaper, issue of Dec 12 1855, reports "Died Christina Steigerwald of E.
Penn Nov 30, aged 95 yrs. 10 mos. 26 dys. Rev Bauer". This implies born Jan 4 1760. The inscription on her tombstone in Ben Salem Church Cemetery says she had 299 descendants at the time of her death.
