Get rid of the paper work and get your students excited about online, interactive learning!
Grade Level This Webquest was designed for a Third Grade ESL class at The American Academy for Girls in Kuwait. It is applicable, though, for grades 2-5.
Rationale
During
the fourth quarter our elementary school's theme is the environment. Third grade
concentrates on "pollution" and "endangered animals".
Therefore, I would like to help them learn more about these two topics at a
level of English they can easily understand. There are some very abstract
concepts that are difficult for them to understand unless they are involved in
doing, or seeing, something related to it.
The vocabulary is also particularly difficult.
Objectives 1
– Give a persuasive speech, using visual aids. 2
- Read for understanding from the Internet Web sites. 3
– Write at least one question about the topic to be sent to an online
environment expert. 4
– Work in cooperative groups.
Design Students will be broken up into four groups. All groups will perform the Introduction readings and activities. Each group will examine a different aspect of the environment by choosing a role to play. The class will be organized on a rotation basis. Each group will get one to two computer times a week for 30 minutes each, using two computers. The last ten minutes will be used for writing in their research journal about what they did that day, sites explored, questions/ideas they have, and what they found helpful. At least once a week each group must sit down together and discuss what they’ve found, ideas or questions they have, and how they want to proceed.
