Glossary

Having a hard time understanding some of the words in this Webquest? Look at the words below. They are in alphabetical order. 

affect - have a result on. The way my parents raised me affects the way I think.

agency - a government organization. The Environmental Protection Agency is a US government organization.

alternative - a choice that can be made other than the first choice. If you don't want tea, the alternative is coffee.

article - a piece of writing, such as a report. Sarah wrote an article in yesterday's newspaper.

charged - made to pay money.  If you break something in a store, you will be charged for it.

compromise - an agreement between parties who disagree, where each party gives up something that they want in return for something else. I wanted to spend the night at Aliya's house but my Mom said no. As a compromise my Dad said I could play at her house until 9:00pm. 

concentrate - focus/ or pay attention only to certain things. My sister talks a lot while she eats, so my mom always tells her to concentrate on her food and stop talking.

contribute - to help bring something about. Dana didn't contribute to the science project, she didn't help us at all.

controversial - subjects that people argue about because they have different ideas and opinions. The way you pray to God is a controversial matter.  Everyone has a different idea about how it should be done.

convince - to make someone feel that your ideas are the best. My son tried to convince me it was OK to hit the little girl.

depletion - used up, or emptied out, until little or nothing remains. There has been a real depletion of my money lately, I don't have any left!

devoured - eaten hungrily or destroyed.  The poor hungry child devoured the food I gave her. It was gone in five minutes!

effects - causes/ makes something happen. John felt the effects of not doing his homework when he failed his test.

energy - powers available for, or used in, working. Mariam didn't eat breakfast this morning and has no energy to run in P.E.

environment - everything around you. Our school has a friendly environment.

environmentally safe - something that doesn't hurt the environment. Things made of paper are environmentally safe because they will break up easily.

exhaust - the smoke or fumes that come out of cars or trucks when the engine burns gas. The exhaust from that old car in front of is makes me cough.

facts - something that has happened or been done; something that is known to be true. It is a fact that the earth moves around the sun.

financial - having to do with money. If you don't have enough money to go to college, you can get financial support from the government.

form - to shape or come up with an idea and organize it.  He studied about worms for two weeks and then formed the opinion that worms are important to the environment.

fossil fuels - oil, coal, and gas. Fossil fuels were formed millions of years ago when plants and animals, such as the dinosaurs, died.

gather - to collect together.  Steve gathered flowers for his mother from every house on the street.

harm - to hurt. Don't push me! I don't want to harm the person in front of me.

hearing - a trial or examination before a judge or judges.  The man from Kuwait spoke at the UN hearing about the horrible things the Iraqi's had done to him in the war.

mission - the sending out of a number of special people who have to do some detailed work. Mary was given the mission to go to the flower shop and choose the nicest flowers for her mother.

occurring - happening. The show is occurring right now. 

opinion - a belief or judgment not founded on complete knowledge; something that is probably true.

persuade - to cause somebody to believe something because of what you have said or done.

pesticides - a chemical that kills insects or rodents such as mice. Pesticides can make people sick if they eat something with the chemicals on it.

pollutants - things that make the air, water, or land dirty.  Burning oil is a pollutant.

pollution - dirty air, land, or water. The air around Los Angeles is yellow because it is full of pollution.

prevention - stopping something from happening. The prevention of forest fires is possible if your are careful with your camp fires and cigarettes.

protection - keeping something or someone safe. My big brother is my protection against those big kids at school who want to hurt me.

recycle - to take something old, break it down into small parts, clean it, and make it new again. Our school recycles old newspapers.  They make new newspapers out of them.

reduce - to make something smaller or less. I want to reduce my weight, I'm too fat.

reuse - to use something again. We reuse our water bottles to plant seeds in them.

scroll down - to click on the arrow on the computer screen and make the text move down. Scroll down to the part where they have games.

source - starting point, where something came from. Jill was the source of the fight, she started it.

speech - a talk given in front of other people. Mohammed had to give a speech about Indian food.

submit - to put something forward for an opinion, decision, or discussion. I submitted my report to the teacher and now I'm waiting for my grade.

toxic - something made of, or caused by poison.  I always buy paint that is not toxic because I'm afraid the children will put it in their mouths and become sick.

treated - to put a substance through a process. I treated the river water by boiling it before we drank it.

variety - a number or group of different things; not all the same. I have a variety of dolls from all over the world, each one is different.

vote - when people choose one thing over another. Our teacher asked the class to vote on whether we wanted to work on our projects or continue in the book this week.

water supply - the place we get our water from (rivers, wells under ground, etc.). When there isn't much rain, the water supply gets very low and we need to be careful not to use too much water.
