History | The negotiation of identity through the usage of time and space
is a phenomenon which occurs all over the world. Many cultures have expanded over time, growing in size and
moving away from their origins of place. As cultural communities migrate, they seek to establish links within new
settings to maintain connections to previous ones. This website explores the construction of a Latino/Hispanic
community in Lubbock, Texas through the use of music and dancing, the particular focus being on salsa and
consequently similar genres that are often included under "salsa" as a generic heading. Time, location, music
genres, social behaviors/activities and their purposes, socio-economic status, social connections, and participant
expectations are some of the factors involved in the creation of a salsa venue in Lubbock.
