Celine Marie Claudette Dion, the youngest of 14 children, was born in Charlemagne, near Montreal, Canada on March 30th, 1968.
At the age of 5, Celine parents and friends started to realize the singing potential of that little girl. When she was 12, Celine was introduced, by her parents, to René Angelil,
a manager that after hearing Celine’s voice, decided to make that
young girl a star. René was so sure of Celine’s talent that he even mortgaged his house
to finance the recording of Celine’s first album. After discover fame in Canada, France and Switzerland, Celine won the "Eurovision Song Contest" (Dublin, April 30, 1988), with the song "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi". It was the beginning of a successful international career. Influenced by the huge success of Michael Jackson,
Celine decided to start singing in English. Her first English album was released in 1990 - "Unison"
- with the hit single "Where
does my heart beat now" that reached number 4 on US charts. Two years later Celine was invited to sing, "Beauty and the
Beast", a duet with Peabo Bryson to the Disney movie, which won her
first Oscar and Grammy for “Best Pop Performance
by a Duo". In 1993 Celine's third album "The Color of my Love" was released. Backed by powerhouse singles “The Power Of Love", “Think Twice", and another popular soundtrack effort in “When I Fall In Love" (from Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan’s Sleepless in Seattle) the release achieved six platinum in the U.S. With "Think Twice" Dion stood for 5 consecutive weeks on top of the British charts. An achievement not replicated since 1965 with the Beatles. The album stayed on the English charts the incredible number of 149 weeks and sold more than one million copies in England. In this same year, Celine increased her humanitarian work for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation after her niece, Karine, died from this disease, at the age of 16. Karine died in Celine's arms while Celine sang "Les oiseaux du bonheur" into her ear. On December 17, 1994, Celine Dion (26) married René Angelil (52), her manager. With "D'eux", Celine achieved what everyone thought was impossible - introduced a French album to the upper reaches of the British charts. "D'eux" became the most successful French album by an artist in history. Celine Dion's opening performance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with "The Power of a Dream" proved that she was now a worldwide sensation. But her enormous success began in 1996 with
"Falling Into You". This became the best-selling album of that
year and one of the best selling CDs ever. The album received
two Grammies ("Best Pop Album" & "Album of the
Year") In 1997,
Celine was invited by James Horner to sing a song to a Hollywood movie -
"TITANIC". The
song was "My heart will go on" and became one of the most
popular songs ever. "TITANIC" became the biggest Hollywood blockbuster. The love theme from the tragic film touched hearts worldwide and converted many non-fans – only extending her already gigantic fan-base. Celine became a diva! "Let's Talk About Love" was released on the same day as the
soundtrack of "TITANIC". Both albums made history selling
around 31 million copies each. Celine won another Oscar and two more
Grammies. In March 1999, René
Angelil, was diagnosed with skin cancer. After being
submitted to therapy René recovered from the disease. Celine that had discovered the volatility of life decided to take a
break from performing for two or more years and have a baby. On January 25, 2001, Celine gave birth to her first child - René Charles Dion Angélil. After her two year hiatus, Celine Dion released "A New Day Has Come". A new major hit around the world for Celine, after enter nr.1 on the charts of 18 countries. On March 25, 2003, Canadian diva started her ambitious project to date: an unique combination of performance, passion and technical innovation. "A New Day...", created by Franco Dragone and presented at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas was a major success with a 5 year run, 717 sold-out shows and 3 million spectators. Celine's show ended on December 15th, 2007 and changed the history of the entertainment scene in Las Vegas!
