About Cubbing

Cubbing is for boys and girls 8 to 11 years of age. It is built around a lively variety of games, crafts, music, storytelling, acting, spiritual fellowship and the outdoors, an essential part of the Cub program. Individual interests and skills are recognized through the rewarding of badges. Weekend events, hiking and camping opportunities round out the Cubbing experience.

Cubs meet in a group called a pack. The pack is split into smaller groups called sixes. The six is led by a Cub called a sixer. The sixer's assistant is called a second. Leaders have jungle names like Akela, Chil, Kaa, and Bagheera.

The idea of Cub Scouts comes from The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. It's a book of stories about the adventures of Mowgli and the wolf cubs.

Mowgli was a young boy who lived in a small village in India. One dark night, a fierce tiger named Shere Khan attacked some villagers around a campfire and Mowgli escaped into the jungle. Mowgli found a family of wolves living in a cave, crawled in, and soon curled up with the tiny wolf cubs.

Raksha, the mother wolf, liked the little boy and wanted to adopt him, but Shere Khan demanded that the wolves give him Mowgli to eat. Raksha was ready to fight to keep Mowgli as her son. Then Baloo, the wise old bear, and Bagheera, the black panther, persuaded Akela, the chief of the wolf pack, to let Mowgli join them.

Mowgli grew up with the wolf cubs. He was taught how to live in the jungle and hunt with the pack by Akela and the other old wolves, along with Chil, Kaa, and Bagheera.

Every Wolf Cub should know:

2. The Grand Howl
3. The Wolf Cub Salute, Handshake, and Motto
4. The story of Robert Baden-Powell
