Justifiably Paranoid was born in November of 2001 when drummer Julian Babbitt, and bassist Tim Rumble started having jam sessions. They wrote the song "Sanguine" during this time. Soon after guitarist Nick Quesada was recruited in December. The group got some covers together and worked on more original material. After a couple of weeks guitarist Rudy Martinez joined the band, bringing with him his long list of covers that he knew how to play. At the time they called themselves "Worse Comes To Worse." The band continued to practice every week, until Nick had to leave the band due to surgery on his shoulder.

Now a trio, the band got more covers together and wrote more new material. Singer Jamie Johnson was brought into the band in April of 2002. Now with a complete line-up, the band had 5 original songs and a long list of covers, and were ready to play some gigs. David Thomas was brought in to sing backups. At this time they called themselves "Zero Gun Salute." They played an impromptu first gig at school on the day of Rudy and Jamie's guitar final. Soon after they played a party gig. Since they live in a boring desert with no scene, gigs are hard to come by.

In July of 2002 they were ready to record a demo, but could not find a studio, so they had to hold off, which is still how it stands. In August of 2002 Jamie left for college, therefore having to leave the band. Thus David has taken over the lead vocals spot. The band did not feel "Zero Gun Salute" fit them well, so they chose "Justifiably Paranoid" as their new name.

In late October of 2002 they played their first real show at Southwest Community Church w/ Marshmallow Forestfire, and it was really awesome. If only there were more shows like that around, life would be great. In Dec. 2002 and Jan. 2003 they recorded their first demo, "Step Up" which contains 4 songs.
