I started with a grungy old M95 Dutch Carbine in 7.7 Calibre (.303). It came from Springfield Sporters caked with cosmoline and just plain filthy. I Mixed up a solution of TSP and boiling water and poured it in a shallow trough. When cool enough (barely) to put my hands in, with rubber gloves, I put the wood in long enough to scrub with a regular kitchen type green scotchbrite pad and soft tooth brush (10-15 minutes). See for your self the before and after pictures.
