Computer and Video Games Final Fight One Preview and Review

From: Computer and Video Games, Issues 237 (Preview) and 240 (Review)

Background: Computer and Video Games (or CVG as it's more commonly known) claims to be the first and best magazine, but I've heard otherwise. Anyway, the first issue I got was in 1997 and that was when the magazine was at it's best. I started collecting it 1 year later, where the magazine wasn't quite as great as before but was still good. One re-launch later the magazine was starting to go down hill. Another re-launch came and cost the magazine dearly, because it was that bad. This is where these scans are from. The magazine was doing so badly that it changed quite a bit in the way it was set out and content, and then had a yet another re-launch, where they just swapped the logo, which was hilarious. Today's CVG is still a poor magazine when compared to the 1996/97 issues. The trouble it has is that every time there is a new console launch, or a new generation of consoles are about to come out, it re-launches. Which is stupid.

Let's start off with the preview first. It calls the game a "spot-on arcade conversion" which it certainly isn't, so I doubt that the writer has even played arcade Final Fight. What's even worse is that he/she goes on to say the animation is jerky, which it isn't. Anyway, if you are wondering what the "and two come along at once" means it is referring to WWF Betrayal which is also a scrolling beat 'em up.

The review for this game, as you can see, is quite rubbish. What was the reviewer expecting, exactly? Final Fight One was one of the first games out on the Game Boy Advance, and certainly the first scrolling beat 'em up. That's why it sold so well, because it is easy to get into and fun. So the bit about new gamers not wanting it is wrong. What's even better is the "Save your money for the much better Street Fighter 2 instead" Well, that game famously had so many bugs it is considered one of the worst Street Fighter games of all time. But, I doubt CVG were even good enough to get to Akuma on the latter game. Finally, they spelt Haggar "Hagar" in the big screenshot.
