Computer and Video Games very early Final Fight One preview

From: Computer and Video Games, Issue 234

Background: Computer and Video Games (or CVG as it's more commonly known) claims to be the first and best magazine, but I've heard otherwise. Anyway, the first issue I got was in 1997 and that was when the magazine was at it's best. I started collecting it 1 year later, where the magazine wasn't quite as great as before but was still good. One re-launch later the magazine was starting to go down hill. Another re-launch came and cost the magazine dearly, because it was that bad. The magazine was doing so badly that it changed quite a bit in the way it was set out and content, and then had a yet another re-launch, where they just swapped the logo, which was hilarious. Today's CVG is still a poor magazine when compared to the 1996/97 issues. The trouble it has is that every time there is a new console launch, or a new generation of consoles are about to come out, it re-launches. Which is stupid.

This scan was taken from the an issue where the magazine was OK but would soon get really bad. Anyway, the Gameboy Advance had just come out and the magazine did an 8 page feature on it and previewed some of the games. Final Fight One is one of them.

If it was called Final Fight One of course. The game is referred to as just "Final Fight" so maybe originally Capcom didn't plan to have the "One" on the end. In every screenshot there are some licensing text at the bottom right.

In the top screenshot Roxy can be seen above Jake, so these screenshots must be from the Japanese version. Or are they? If this were true then wouldn't the licensing text be in Japanese? Were Poison and Roxy originally going to be in this game until somebody thought it would be safer to put Billy and Sid in instead?

Well, maybe. But it is likely that the licensing text was added on top of each screen shot and so the version probably is the Japanese one.

The caption for the middle shot says that this version is the same as the arcade. Well since CVG didn't know for sure since they were told by someone else I'll let them off. It wasn't a conversion of the arcade but the SNES one. You could tell from the screenshots but they obviously didn't know.

Finally, CVG really screwed up the preview section of the feature. If you look at the top, it says "PLATFORMCAPCOM" So, Capcom have made a console of their own, have they? No, it should say "PLATFORMGBA" But the whole section is about Gameboy Advance games so they didn't really have to have a platform thing at all. It should say "BYCAPCOM" This kind of thing happened on a lot of the other screenshots in the other games in the feature.
