Magic Terms (Cited partially
from PFRPG pg. 185)
Level of Experience or Level of the
spell caster refers to the experience level of the
person who is casting the magic. This is very important, because
the higher the experience level of the spell caster, the more
powerful the spell (usually). Many invocations will indicated
something like "Duration: 5 melees per
level of experience," or "1d6 damage per level of the
spell caster", and so on.
Range: The Maximum distance the magic can be cast, indicating "X" number of meters, by touch, or radius (area of spell effect).
Area affect magics are spells that affect everyone in a given area or radius. A spell with a 4.6m (15ft) radius, affects everybody within in the circle of its effect, those outside the area are not affected.
Line of vision means that the character's target/victim must be within in his sight (line of vision) to be attacked. If the target is not seen, is totally obscured by obstacles, darkness, invisibility, or just not seen by the spell caster, the magic cannot be used. However, some line of vision spells with an area affect can be directed at a specific location that the spell caster can see in an attempt to strike an invisible or hidden enemy.
Touch means that the magic's effects can only be transmitted through physical contact.
Duration: This indicates how long the magic's effects last, whether it is instant like a fireball, or long-lasting like Ray Wing.
Penetration solely refers to attack spells; effect spells may also have this implying specific ways for people to protect themselves. The first thing that should be noted is if penetration is 'Automatic', '+x', or 'None.' Spells with automatic penetration bypass natural or artificial armour ratings, while those with none do not. Also, further notes may determine if certain types of armour are especially effected or resistant to the magic, for example, most electrical attacks have automatic penetration, but do no damage to metal armour (the electricity is conducted straight through the armour into the wearer), while if the person is wearing leather or other hide armour, then the armour and the wearer both take damage, but by half, this is a general rule to electricity, but there are exceptions. In other cases, some spells won't have automatic or nil penentration, but still require a standard armour penetration roll (d20 plus the bonus listed). Meanwhile an Burst Rond is more of an impact attack, with no penetration whatsoever.
Notes on Spells of
Legend
Spells of Legend are the highest order of magic, their very
power able to destroy cities or rival the gods. Sorcerers
can only learn Spells of Legend from their primary spell category
(the one determined during the Sorcerers character
creation). I.E. A Black Mage cannot learn White Magic, Shaman, or
Wizard Spells of Legend. Lastly, Spells of Legend are not subject
to any M.P. cost modifiers, positive or negative.
Notes on Combination
Magic
Taking two types of magic and weaving them together to create a
different sort of magic creates combination magics. Combination magics, after Summoning Magic, are the only magics that cannot be learned by
every Sorcerer. Only a person who has field talent in one (or both
in the case of some Shamans) part of the combination can learn
combination magics.
Combination Magic may only be learned through study, and cannot
be gained automatically with new levels of experience. Also note,
that some Combinations magics have openings to certain Summoning
Spells. Lastly, Combination Magics are not subject to any M.P.
cost modifiers, positive or negative.
Spells are grouped in types and then arranged by level alphabetically. Wizard Spells that are Temporal have a [T] next to their names, and Wizard Scrying Spells have an [S] next to their names. Combination Magics are determined by two letters in brackets, B=Black, Wh=White, A=Air, E=Earth, F=Fire, S=Spirit, Wa=Water Wi=Wizard. The numbers in parenthesis next to the spell names are the M.P. costs.
