In the Bowery Boys movie Jungle Gents, Clint Walker of TV's Cheyenne
played Jeff Norman, who posed as Tarzan-like jungle man.
FOOTNOTES:1...Stellan Windrow was the first adult Tarzan; he left after 5 weeks of filming to join the military. (A few treetop scenes he did can be seen in the final film.) Elmo Lincoln was then brought in to play Tarzan, with Frank Merrill doing some of his stunt work.
... P.(erce) Dempsey Tabler agreed to replace House Peters as Tarzan in the serial "Son Of Tarzan" in 1920. (In this production, a wedding scene between Tarzan and Jane was shown.) Jack Hoxie was announced to play Korak, but was lukewarm to the idea and gave way to Kamuela Searle; Searle was fatally injured when an elephant slammed him to the ground during filming. He died soon after, and another actor had to double for him in a few scenes.
...Joe Bonomo (known as the Samson of the Circus) was hired to play Tarzan in "Tarzan The Mighty" (originally titled "Jungle Tales Of Tarzan"), but fractured his leg while filming "Perils Of The Wild" and Frank Merrill instead ended up playing Tarzan.
...Many actors were considered for the 1931 version of "Tarzan The Ape Man" but Johnny Weissmuller, the champion oylmpic swimmer, got the part. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. suggested Herman Brix, but he hurt his shoulder while filming the motion picture "Touchdown". Others considered were Charles Bickford, Joel McCrea, Johnny Mack Brown, Tom Tyler and Clark Gable. Maureen O'Sullivan was not director Van Dyke's first choice to play Jane (Leila Hyams was), but ended up with the role.
...When Sol Lesser got the rights to film a Tarzan film in 1932, he also inherited James Pierce as Tarzan along with the contract. But Lesser was able to pay Pierce $5000 to step down and cast Buster Crabbe.
...Herman Brix finally got the opportunity to play Tarzan and had Burroughs approval for the 1935 serial "The New Adventures Of Tarzan". Brix's Tarzan was more like the one Burroughs' created. Not until Gordon Scott made "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure" would Tarzan start to break away from the "Me Tarzan, you Jane" apeman begun by MGM in 1932.
..."Tarzan Escapes" was filmed with the title "The Capture Of Tarzan" under the supervision of Sam Zimbalist. But the preview audience thought the film too gruesome, especially for younger audiences, so Richard Thorpe was brought in to make the film more acceptable. He "achieved a complete reversal in overall effect" and the title was changed to "Tarzan Escapes". In doing so, all future MGM Tarzan films became more juvenile.
...Lex Barker became the next Tarzan, beating out all the other candidates, including Jock Mahoney, when Weissmuller decided to retire from the role after making twelve films. Johnny would go on to do twelve Jungle Jim films for Sam Katzman.
...Gordon Scott made three episodes for a proposed TV series in 1958 after completing "Tarzan's Fight For Life". None of the networks picked up the series, so it was shelved until 1966, when it was edited together and released as a TV movie called "Tarzan and The Trappers".
...Jock Mahoney played the villain in Gordon Scott's last Tarzan film, and then was chosen to be the next (13th) Tarzan. But at 43 years old, he was one of the oldest to play the role.
...Mike Henry succeeded Mahoney as Tarzan, winning the part over 400 candidates. Mahoney was sick during much of TARZAN'S 3 CHALLENGES with dysentery, dengue fever and pneumonia and could not continue. It took him a year and a half to recover.
...Ron Ely was the first Tarzan to actually star in a regular TV series. Mike Henry was supposed to play the role, but because of a chimpanzee bite on the chin and general dissatisfaction with the way he was treated (making three Tarzan films before the first one was released), stepped down in favor of Ely.
...Lee Canalito was chosen to play Tarzan in Bo Derek's 1981 remake (at first called JANE); after filming began, however, she realized he was wrong for the role and Miles O'Keeffe was brought in to play Tarzan. He had no dialogue and Weissmuller's Tarzan yell" was used.
...Robert Towne spent 4 years planning to make GREYSTOKE, but because of disagreements about finishing the film "Personal Best", Warner Brothers took it away from him and gave it to Hugh Hudson, academy award winning director of "Chariots Of Fire". Towne had chosen Patrick Norbert to play Tarzan. Towne removed his name from the credits and used a pen name. Hudson cast Christopher Lambert as the adult John Clayton (Tarzan). The name Tarzan was not spoken in the film. Tali McGregor played Tarzan as a baby, and Eric Langlois played him as a young boy.
...Joe Lara won the lead in "Tarzan in Manhattan", the pilot for what was hoped would be a new TV series about Tarzan being relocated to New York. Kim Crosby played a cab-driving Jane. But the pilot was not well-received (to say the least). Lara did end up as the star of the series "Tarzan, the Epic Adventures" seven years later. Lara was also the first Tarzan to wear calf-length boots.
...Wolf Larson was selected to star in the next " Tarzan" TV series, this one more juvenile than the others, with the main focus being on the environment. Lydie Denier was his co-star as Jane. Larson was the second blonde Tarzan (Denny Miller being the first).
...Xavier DeClie was chosen to replace Joe Lara as Tarzan, and a search was underway to find an actress to play Jane in a second season of "Tarzan, the Epic Adventures". The first season with Joe Lara was seen as too much "sword and sorcery", and not enough jungle adventure. I thought Lara did a very credible job. The fault was in the writing and direction the show took. So far there is nothing new to report. Will there be a second season with DeClie?
...Casper Van Dien, fresh from "Starship Troopers" was the next Tarzan, with Jane March as Jane Porter. It was made by one of the producers of Greystoke, but failed at the box office. Most critics panned the film, but it actually wasn't that bad.
...Don Bragg, a long-time Tarzan fan, went to Jamaica to film an unauthorized Tarzan film, "Tarzan And The Jewels of Opar" for Sherman Krelberg and Sandy Howard in 1964. But the Burroughs estate stepped in and forced production to close. There have been other Tarzan films made overseas, but not released in this country with the name Tarzan. Joe Robinson's character's name was changed to "Thaur". Steve Hawkes name was shortened to "Zan" for one of his films. Buster Crabbe even played Kaspa in "King of the Jungle", a Tarzan "rip-off" in the 1930's before playing Tarzan. Kaspa was raised by lions instead of by apes.
...India made a few unuathorized Tarzan films in the 1960's. Sargaam Chittra, Ltd., an Indian movie Company cranked out 10 Tarzan quickies. Indian wrestler Darasingh played the Apeman in "Rocket Tarzan", "Tarzan and Delilah", "Tarzan And King Kong" and "Tarzan Comes To Delhi". Azad replaced Darasingh and co-starred with "the beautiful" Chitra" for the films "Tarzan And Cleopatra", "Tarzan And The Gorilla", "Tarzan's Beloved", "Tarzan And Magician", "Tarzan And Captain Kishore" and " Tarzan And Circus", all made for the Nigerian market.
...An independent US company, headed by Ray Dennis Steckler and scripted by Ron Haydock, announced plans to do a Tarzan film, "Jungle Tales Of Tarzan", starring Brick Bardo and Carolyn Brandt. But ERB Inc. stopped them from proceeding. A Czechoslovakian film called "Death Of Tarzan" was also prevented from distribution by ERB Inc.
