What does Culture mean ?
"Culture means the complex whole of solutions which a human community inherits, adapts or invents in order to meet the challenges of its natural and social environment."
However there needs to be a balance between on the one hand a society's own identity and roots, and on the other hand these external influences. If the latter are too dominant then a society is in danger of being crushed and losing its identity. But if, on the contrary, there is an obsession with idealising the past then not only will a society fail to develop but there is a danger that fundamentalism will arise with its associated
nationalism and racism leading to hatred and aggressiveness. Thus a community needs to be both selective in choosing the external influences which it wishes to adopt but it also needs to adapt these influences to make them more appropriate and acceptable to the community.
