The City of Chicago and the suburbs are all connected by a network of expressways, tollways, and one freeway. The first expressway in the metro was opened November 1, 1950. This ran from 159th Street to the Indiana/Illinois State Line. It was named the Calumet Expressway. Over time that strech became known as the Bishop Ford Freeway and the Kingery Expressway.
The Chicago Metro has six expressways, four tollways, one toll bridge, and one freeway. These highways are controled by three different maintence departments. The expressways and the freeway are maintaned by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The skyway toll bridge is operated by the City of Chicago. Chicago's four tollways are operated by the Illinois State Toll Highway Athourity.
