        Population: Sanctuary is a small city of about 30 square miles, set on a peninsula overlooking Casco Bay, with a nighttime population of about 68,000 that swells to over 150,000 during the day. When the surrounding residential areas are included (Hawk's Inlet, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, and Kernow, Map of Southern Maine) which serve as bedroom towns for the city, the population rises to to close to 200,000. Most of these residential areas are not more than a 30 minute drive from the cities downtown center (and there is really no such thing as rush hour).Major Industries: shipping, tourism, fishing, food products, manufactured goods (which include furniture, apparel, and electronics--mostly in the Scarborough area ). Several innovative software companies and electronics companies have moved to this area recently creating almost it's own little 'Silicon Valley' in New England.

        Transportation--Sanctuary Intl. Airport is a regional airport with commuter flights to Boston and NY. There is also Elysian Fields, which is designed for smaller planes. Amtrak regularly connects the city to Boston, and there is a commercial railway for shipping. Both Greyhound and Trailways service operate within the city. The Sanctuary Metro Bus Lines serves the needs of those without cars.

        TOURISM

        Sanctuary has a thriving tourist industry The Port often welcomes ships from major cruise lines, including a visit by the QE2 on one occasion. Many are drawn to it's quaint charm and relaxed atmosphere which attracts thousands of visitors a year. .

        The Old Port and Exchange Portland's Old Port District has been restored to 19th century splendor, with cobbled streets and beautiful Victorian brick buildings housing an eclectic mix of restaurants, microbreweries, art galleries, and specialty shops. Here you can enjoy views of Casco Bay while dining, or browse through the quaint shops selling crafts, antiques, and Maine-made products. Like the rest of Portland, the Old Port is very walkable. Most of Portland's best attractions are within a ten-minute walk. The Sanctuary Museum of Art, housing a permanent collection of paintings by Winslow Homer, Renoir, Degas, Monet, Picasso, and other masters, is only five blocks away. Next door is the Children's Museum of Maine. The State Theater and the Sanctuary Performing Arts Center, offering concerts and other events, are in the same neighborhood. Two blocks from the Old Port is the Cumberland Civic Center, Sanctuary's entertainment complex, which is home to the Sanctuary Pirates professional hockey team. Top name concerts, trade shows, and other events take place here on a regular basis. Concerts can also be enjoyed at the Sanctuary Symphony Orchestra in the Auditorium at beautiful Sanctuary City Hall at the top of the Old Port.

        The Silver Unicorn, a pub which recently opened in the area boasts some of the finest imported beers in the world, ,and hosts local folk acts on evenings ( and the occassional storyteller from time to time) has its own microbrewery, and a large selection of international beers; those who love games will enjoy it's 3 pool tables, darts area--and for those who enjoy quieter entertainment, try your hand at chess with one of the regulars! Floating Island is an excellent restaurant famed for it's seafood (some of the biggest lobster you'll ever find) and excellent continental cuisine; it is located on a ferry boat with an impressive view of the harbor.

        At the base of the Old Port is Sanctuary Harbor and the city's thriving working waterfront, a hodge-podge of condos, fish markets, and ferry docks, and a jumping off spot for cruises to several of Casco Bay's hundreds of islands. Relaxing dinner, sunset, or whale watching cruises are also popular, or for a more active experience, you can take a sail training or sport fishing cruise.

        There are a number of sites of historical interest, including the newly restored Sanctuary Observatory on Montroy Hill.

        ARTS AND EDUCATION

        The University of Maine at Sanctuary is well-known for its paranormal studies, engineering, environmental sciences, nursing, and theater arts programs.

        Wadsworth-Longfellow University, named for the famed local poet is a private liberal arts school. The library contains a collection of some of the rarest first edition manuscripts and books. Incongruously, it sits on the edge of the vampire district, and area which has become popular with the local Goth and college-age crowd.

        The Sanctuary Artistic Arts Center trains in all fields of artistic endeavo, including fine arts, architectural studies and fashion design. It includes the Artistic Arts Performance Crew, who often give free concerts during the summer seasons.

        SANCTUARY JUSTICE COMPLEX and POLICE DEPARTMENT

        The Justice Complex

        Sanctuary opened its newly designed Justice Complex, which puts the courthouse, the Sanctuary Police Dept. office and the Coroner's Office all in sprawling area. The whole complex, while completely new, is designed to blend in with the lovely Victorian architecture surrounding it.

        While Sanctuary is a relatively peaceful place when compared to major cities, it has the usual problems of a small and prosperous city. There are rapes, muggings, burglaries, domestic violence, assaults, and murders. Several sub-stations are located throughout the city, which brings the police and the community into close contact, fostering an air of caring and commitment.

        At HQ, there is a Violent Crimes Division, which handles sex crimes, assaults, muggings, and domestic violence. There's a burglary squad, vice, narcotics.

        The SPD also has a SWAT team, which has been trained to handle supernatural crime.

        Then there is the Paranormal Safety Task Force. Although there are the occassional interdepartmental rivalries, but most of the police are Sanctuary then tend to work quite work well together all in all. As a booming tourist town, safety is paramount.

        Because Sanctuary has always been a magnet for supernaturals, special care was made in hiring and training officers with knowledge of the occult and the supernatural. It has expanded to include 4 detectives and four uniformed police due to the recent rise in crimes against supernaturals.

        When the Supernatural Civil Rights Act was passed, officers were recruited who could work with supernaturals, as well as arrest them. The team investigates any crime with a supernatural angle to it. They are, as a rule,not bigots and there are sensitivity training courses for any officer who dares to cross the line. Supernaturals pay taxes, just like everyone else.

        The Sanctuary Fire Department

        The Sanctuary Fire Department consists of 232 career Fire fighters and Paramedics, operating 6 Engines, 2 Ladders, 2 Quints, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Fireboat, 1 Rescue Boat, 4 Air Rescues, and 3 Paramedic Ambulances. Responding to 8196 Fire and 9471 EMS calls in 1999, which is a total of 17,667 Emergency calls. The Fire Department Fire Alarm Division also responded to 11,915 Non-emergency calls, and 757 EVCS calls in 1999. This was an decrease in emergency calls of 205 Fire calls, and an increase of 236 calls for Medcu which is the EMS Division of the Sanctuary Fire Dept.The SFD protects a diverse community that contains a major Seaport, an International Jetport, large industrial companies, a large area of residential multi unit dwellings that consist of numerous tightly packed three to five story apartment houses, and 2 major highways.
