Fantasy Football League 2002
Reigning Wolf Bowl Champion - "Shortline"

News -

01-08-03
Well the results are tabulated and although we all know who scored big in the playoffs, there still is:

High Point
Slaughter
I Blow Chunks
I Didn't Win Dick

Per the rules, teams may only receive one post season award, and are awarded the first one they are eligible for, in the order stated above. So with Shortline, Cooks, Marv's and Hefe out of the running (they won playoff $$) the rest of us were left to fight over the $50.00 total prize scraps.

High Point:
Oh sure, we had a couple of 90+ scores this year - but those were Hefe's. Next up - BANANAS with his 89 point week 7 drubbing over Schmen. $15.00 to Bananas!

Slaughter:
Mmmmm. Hefe again. How would you like to have been Krunch this year facing Hefe? He was mashed this year twice - with point differences of 68 and 55 points. That's right. Those aren't the point totals, that's how much he won by... and each of those totals would have qualified for the slaughter had Hefe been eligible. Next best slaughter was Marv's killing Smoke in week 2 by 59, but Marv's already has the Consolation Bowl win. Next in line was Bananas in that same monster week 7 - a 54 point win there, but he already has the High Point... So who does it fall to? WOODIES with his 41 point win over this Shortline in week 13.  $15.00 to Woodies!

I Blow Chunks:
To review, this is to go to the owner with the worst record with weekly lineups. Here is where those "DOH!'S" come into play. 3 disqualifies you. Too bad too, because Smoke would have been a winner here. His 3-9-1 record tied the league's worst record with Woodies, who already had snagged the Slaughter... Next worse record? KRUNCH, sporting his very unfashionable 4-9-0 record. $10.00 to Krunch!

Didn't Win Dick:
Here we find the owner with the lowest total payouts for the regular season. This is basically who scored the fewest Weekly High Point awards... but durn! There's them "DOH!'S" again. Hawks, who hadn't had a single high point all year,  was bounced from the first round of the playoffs and incurred his third "DOH!" which made him ineligible in week 14... Who else got 0 High Points? Lessee...Cooks (Wolf Bowl loser), Woodies (Slaughter), Krunch (Chunks), and Smoke (ineligible)... Ok, how bout only one High Point win? Well there's Shortline, (Wolf Bowl winner) and HEY! A WINNER! SQUIDS! $10.00 to Squids!

To recap and their totals:

Win: Team Payout Payout with weeks 1-13 factored.
Wolf Bowl Win and Congrats Shortline $109.00 $110.00
Wolf Bowl Loss Cooks $78.00 $74.00
Consolation Bowl Win Marv's $41.50 $37.50
Consolation Bowl Loss Hefe $31.50 $29.50
High Point Bananas $15.00 $21.00
Slaughter Woodies $15.00 $9.00
Chunks Krunch $10.00 $9.00
Dick Squids $10.00 $6.00

Hefe - your payout will likely come from here in TX. Short - your big bucks will be coming from CA.

So there you have it! Another great year of Shasta Old Timers Fantasy Football. I had a great year, despite my record, and can't wait to have another rip at it next year.

As usual, CaComm and I, TxComm are always happy to field suggestions. Send 'em in via the usual ways.

Last task for me is to archive this site. So for the last time this year -

I'm out.

Happy New Year! Yeah, yeah I hear you - "Where's the $$??" I was supposed to do it today, but I'll get it all put together tomorrow. Some surprises in the non playoff payouts... stay tuned!

And there you have it!  Our 2002 campaign is done.  Congratulations to the mighty SHORTLINE, our newest champion!!!  GREAT JOB!

The "trophy" stays in the heart of Texas for another year.  That makes it 3-2 with Dude leading (not that anyone is counting).

For Shortline, this was a long awaited championship.  No stranger to the playoffs, Shortline has ALWAYS been a contender.  Let's look at his playoff records:

  • Year 1999, defeated in the Wolf Bowl

  • Year 2000, defeated in the Consolation Bowl

  • Year 2001, wins the Consolation Bowl

  • Year 2002, wins the Wolf Bowl

Damn Shortline, no one should ever under estimate your competitiveness.  Some of us will kill for a track record like that.  Not that Shortline didn't earn it, but has Cooks paid attention to his starting QB (and actually started one that was playing) this would have all been for not, as Cooks would have won by 4.  (BTW, anyone relying on any Tampa Bay players was absolutely SCREWED!).

On the flip side, Martians goes in the contest leading by 15, Hefe-Raiders  got 3.

Martians holds on the be the Consolation Bowl Winner! Congratulations to MARV'S MARTIANS for another good year!

How has Martians faired in Bowl games since inception of the league?

  • Year 2001, defeated in the Wolf Bowl

  • Year 2002, wins the Consolation Bowl

Not too bad, for one so cocky on the message board, but damn, it's entertaining.  Marv, don't change a thing!

Everyone sit tight and in a week or so, all the year end awards will be handed out, along with payouts for some of you lucky coaches.

Once again, thanks everyone for playing this year, without everyone's constant involvement, our league would not be a success.  Lastly, a BIG thanks to TxComm who has carried the league much of the year, and under trying circumstances.  Mike, your the MAN!

God Bless to all, Merry Christmas, Happy New Years, Banana's is signing off...

Down to the last game of the FFL season...  Had in error in the consolation bowl analysis.  Marv started McNair, QB, TEN not Bledsoe, QB, BUF.  A good call on his part (now looking at the stats).  Additionally, he did not start Shokey, TE, NYG, but instead started Chambers, WR, MIA in the Saturday contest.  My bad, I've been in the middle of computer upgrades and had an old league file (last weeks starters, I think).

The teams leading are DONE, the teams trailing have significant players in the MNF contest.

Here is where we are going into the final FFL Monday Night contest, at least we know of 4 people who will be watching...:

Wolf Bowl 2002
Shortline (30) leading Cooks (22+) -
Shortline is done at 30, with George, RB, TEN being his leading scorer at 15 points.  Cooks still has 3 players in the MNF contest and needs a mere 9 points to take his SECOND Wolf Bowl title in THREE years (skill or luck?):

  • Johnson, QB, TB

  • Pittman, RB, TB

  • Burress, WR, TB

Consolation Bowl 2002
Martians (50) over Hefe (35+) -
Martian is done at 50, with big days from Barber, RB, NYG (12) and Stallworth, WR, NO (10).  HefeRaiders still has 2 players in the MNF contest and needs 16 for the comeback win in his inaugural season:

  • Bettis, RB, PIT

  • McCardell, WR, TB

Good luck team!

Merry Christmas

Great, got all the line-ups in!  There I am, turning on the TV to the SATURDAY game, thinking, yeah, I knew that.  SHIT, I didn't get to the FFL write up yet.  Arrrggghhh!!!

OK so here is the deal going into tomorrows games:

Wolf Bowl 2002

Cooks (18+) over Shortline (5+) -
Cooks got 2 from Barlow, RB, SF, 7 from Moss, WR, MIN, and 9 from SF DEF.  Shortline got 5 from Mare, K, MIA.

QB:  Farve, GB vs. Johnson, TB - GB play BUF, one of the worst passing defenses in the league, while Johnson play PIT, one of the toughest.
ADVANTAGE:  Cooks

RB:  With Holmes out, and Barlow only getting 2, you have to like Shortline's chances with George, TEN and James, IND.
ADVANTAGE:  Shortline

WR:  Cooks still has Buress, PIT and Kennison, KC.  Short - Bruce, STL; Glenn, GB; Muhsin, CAR.  Yuck!  Buress is up against the TB DEF, Kennsion is up against the SD DEF, tough!  Bruce vs. SEA; Glenn vs. BUF; Muhsin vs. who cares, can anyone throw the ball in CAR?  Cooks 7 from Moss maybe all he gets.
ADVANTAGE:  Shortline

K, DEF:  Short still has the TEN Def vs. JAX, while Cooks has Edinger at CAR.  TEN will have to get 9 to keep pace with Cooks 9 posted from his SF Def, while Edinger needs 5 to keep pace with Shortlines 5 from Mare, SD.
ADVANTAGE:  Cooks

Prediction:  Shortline by a hair over the Holems'less Holmes.

Consolation Bowl 2002

Martians (10+) over Hefe (5+) -

QB:  Marv - Bledsoe, BUF McNair, TEN vs. Gannon, OAK.  Wow, you call it here.  With BUF playing GB, Bledsoe is going to have to throw to keep 'em in the game.  Gannon is against the Raiders nemesis, Denver.  Tough Call.
ADVANTAGE:  Push

RB: Marv maybe in trouble here as his stud Williams, RB, MIA only gets 2!  Marv still has Barber, NJG.  HefeRaiders has Bettis, PIT and Garner, OAK.
ADVANTAGE:  Hefe

WR:  Marv - Moulds, BUF; Stallworth, NO; Shockey, NJG.  Yes, Marv has started a TE in a bowl game.  Interesting strategy!  Hefe - McCardell, TB; Rice, OAK; Ward, PIT.
ADVANTAGE:  Hefe

K:  Marv - Longwell, GB vs. Shank, OAK
ADVANTAGE:  Marv, but not by much...

DEF:  Marv - NO vs. Hefe - MIA (5).
ADVANTAGE:  Marv

Prediction:  HefeRaiders on a roll.

So there it is, I have the TX division beating up on the CA division.  Come on guys, lets get the trophy back home!

Once again, sorry for the late comment.  CaComm

12-20-02
3 line-ups in.  Of course, COOKS is missing.  I will do commentary tomorrow, with our without, the missing Holmes line-up.

Gotta give it up for TxComm.  Great job during the playoffs!  It is really hard to do any kind of lineup analysis when they are getting emailed in at 11pm the night before kickoff.  Way to go Mike!

I will graciously take the league for Wolf Bowl '02.

I have to apologize to TxComm and the league as I have not had any free time the last couple of weeks.  Try as I might, something was always preventing me from chiming in with any sort of analysis.  Looks like my PC problems are behind me, and the house is just about ready for Christmas guests.

Get me your lineups as soon as possible on Saturday, there shouldn't be any mysteries here.  Who will Cooks play with his horse on the sideline.  Must be a bitch to ride your bitch into the playoffs, only to get bucked off the week of the finals.  We will see how much depth the kid has on his roster now....

Out, CaComm.

12-17-02
I kept expecting an email from Shortline that said, "How 'bout that Tennessee Defense, eh?". Perhaps he sent it to Hefe... Short needed 12 and got 15 from the TEN D alone. Toss in the 6 he got from Eddie George and he more than covered the deficit - had Hefe started his Defense or not. Shortline advances to the Wolf bowl where he'll meet Cooks.

Over in the Consolation bowl Hefe will have home field advantage over Marvs. We'll see if we can improve on commentary and analysis for the final games, although it might be tough on my end - I'm outta here on Thursday and no PC access to update the page after that... I'll have to rely on CaComm.

12-16-02
Monday morning and one in the Father / Son houshold has the blues...with no Monday night players going for either the Cooks or Marv's, Cooks advances with a wholloping on Dad - 53-35.

So, who will Cooks face in the Wolf Bowl?
Who will Marv's face in the Consolation Bowl?

Tonight's game will be very closely watched by a couple of guys here in TX. Hefe's no defense start backfired to the tune of 8 points - points that might have made the difference. He put up enough to be up on Shortline by 11, but Shortline has the Tennessee defense and Eddie George running tonight. Hefe owns the tie-break, so Short will need 12. Does that happen? Lessee - George is averaging 7.7 ppg, and the TEN Def is averaging 5.15 ppg. Checking my math, but that looks like 12+... Granted NE is no pushover opponent, but they do give up average or better than average numbers. This one could be close. Like I said, those 8 points look huge now.

TxComm

12-15-02
Sunday all the lineups are in. Hefe intentionally no starts his Miami Defense, which is violation of the starter requirements, however, there is no penalty spelled out in the rules for this infraction. The commissioners will have to confer. I've posted additional information to Hefe on the Message Board.

Battle of the Father son -  I gotta say, the matchups favor son.

Hefe / Shortline - Gee, do you think Hefe is going to be watching the Oak - Mia game? His season goes on or stops this week based on that game alone. Hefe - Start your Defense!

TxComm

12-13-02
This just in.... Some lineups. Not all, but most - commentary to follow manana. CaComm may just chime in, too.

Woah... Great games - not the NFL one last night, but the ones in our league. Everyone that needed to comeback did, and all the top seeds move into the second round of the playoffs. It should be noted that this is the first year that has ever happened in our league. Let's recap -  -

Dude -
Cook's & Marv's were already set for the Dude. Marv's piled on Squiddies big time with 16 points from Ricky Williams, who had a monster game. Cooks apparently has learned his humility from somewhere outside the home, in that he didn't feel the need to shamelessly pile on to Bananas, although its hard to pass on a 50+ yard field goal. Add 5 to his score from his kicker. Father and son, playoff style - next round in the Dude.

Y'all -
Schmen has had Hefe's number all year, taking him in their two regular season meetings - a 10 point win in week 6 and a 5 point loss last week. Hefe needed 9 point going into last night from his Miami Defense. Well, we all saw the game last night - Miami STUFFED da Bears for a measly 195 yards. "Hmmm.. That's good and all, but that's only 5 points on yards against... Ok, how bout another 2 off a fumble recovery?... Still not enough? Right then. How 'bout THREE picks? There you go - another 6. That should be more than enough." It was - 13 points from a monster Miami D day and the win goes to the top Y'all seed.

Shortline needed 8 from his kicker last night to overtake Hawks. Now, getting 8+ points from a kicker is no big deal - until you need him to do it. I don't know about y'all, but I can't recall how many times I needed points from a player on Monday night only to watch him come up short. Not last night. Mare was a perfect 2-2 FG and 3 XP's... 9 points.

Toilet Bowl - Woodies held on and will have 1st round draft pick next year.

The schedule for round 2 is set -
Cooks at home vs. Marv's
Hefe at home vs. Shortline.

Non - playoff award winners announced this week.

How'd we do? Let's see:

Toast:
Marv' (50+) over Squids (31)
Squids first foray into the playoffs finds him sliced, diced and owing what will amount to a case of beer once Marv's gets his points out of Ricky Williams tonight. With the exception of his Defense, Squids got sub-par performances from his whole crew, and his bench wasn't much better - with the exception of Steve Smith, who had 23 points - but really, two punt returns for TD's... who could have seen that coming? For Marv's, it could have been a monster day for Bledsoe, were it not for the 4 picks, but not to worry, 328 yards and 2 TD's ain't bad. Marv's moves to round 2, where he'll meet his son:

Cooks (51+) over Bananas (46)
The number one see in the Dude did a fine job of riding the Holmes train into the second round of the playoffs. He got some welcome unexpected help from QB Johnson, putting up 17 points himself. Bananas is done at a very respectable 46 getting a monster day from Deuce McAllister (21), but alas, not enough. Cooks still has his Kicker, Edinger, to pile on with tonight.

You can smell it cookin...
none here... They all need tonight's game:

Pending Toasts:
Schmen (50) currently holding over Hefe (41+)
I said that Schmen would love Jeffy Garcia and for good reason - 22 points from the man yesterday. Good thing he came up big too, because he got virtually nothing from his other players - in fact, he did get nothing from two of them. He's praying his 9 points will hold over Hefe, who sport Miami's defense tonight. Gannon did throw for over 300 yards for Hefe, but no TD's, which meant, of course, that Rice didn't score a TD either - but damn, he did catch 7 for 113. Remember, Hefe holds homefield advantage - a tie goes to him.

Hawks (53) vs. Shortline (45+)
Hawks rolled 'em over and still managed a nice score. Shortline will be looking for 8 points from his kicker Mare, which he has done pretty regularly this year (7.4 ppg avg.) Jurevicious was the big recipient of TB's Johnson's 4 TD passes, getting two of them and putting up 16 points for Hawks. Shortline got nice days from George and Muhammed, but Trina Glenn put up a goose egg... C'mon Trina, anything would have helped.

Toilet bowl:
Woodies is done, holding on to a 16 point lead over Krunch, who will trot out Jay Fiedler and Marty Booker tonight. Given Woodies luck this season the lead won't hold.

Good luck everyone tonight.

TxComm

12-06-02
First round of the playoffs are on... Here it is 1.5 hours away from Kick off and unbelievably, no lineup from Hawks yet. Please
don't tell me that we'll have a "DOH" in a playoff round...

Dude:
Cooks (1) vs. Bananas (4)
QB's - Cooks starts Brad Johnson at QB. You might think that's not so great, but consider, Mr. Johnson is the 9th best QB in our league over the last 3 weeks. On the flip side of that, Bananas starts Mike Vick, the 2nd best over the last 3 weeks. Ironically, both QB's are in the same game, and the TB defense is as tough as Vick is better than Johnson. Hmmm.... I still gotta give the edge to Bananas and Vick, because TB is so tough against what is considered the conventional QB, and Vick is anything but that. RBs - Why does Cooks even bother starting anyone else after Holmes. What is amazing is Cooks did exactly this 2 years ago with Faulk on his roster. Holmes is averaging 16.4 points per game. Anyone else getting that kind of production from any player? Me neither. He's praying hard on with his second starter, Jamal White, back after 4 weeks with an injury. Bananas goes with Hearst and McAllister, who together just average Holmes output. No slam on McAllister, though, as he is putting up a pretty nice year. As matchups go, Hearst faces Dallas, who if anything is a tough D, and McAllister faces BAL, who have become pretty average this year. Holmes faces STL (like it matters) and White will go against JAX, who is pretty tough against the run... in the WR department the trio of Burress, Moss and Pathon will show for Cooks, Bananas will trot out Coles, Horn and Jackson. Hmm...
Without the Holmes factor this one is tough to call. I believe it will come down to him. Monster day from Holmes - give the win to Cooks. STL keys on Holmes and shuts him down, (and sure another chief will have a huge day) and give the win to Bananas.

Marv's (2) vs. Squids (3)
Marvs is looking to Bledsoe again - who will be facing his old team (look for a big game). Barber and Williams are always solid. in the WR's you never know which Keyshawn will show up, and Porter is 3 string behind Rice and Brown, he'll be good for a point. I do like the Moulds starts. Again - Bledsoe will be pumped and Moulds is the guy he throws to. For Squidley Didleys, Brooks will need to be big. Alexander has disappointed this year and Travis Henry has been inconsistent (another Buffalo Bill). Jimmy Smith is great, and Rod Smith will have Griese back to throw to him. I'm not sure about Kevin Johnson at all...
As much as I love seeing Squids first visit to the playoffs, I have to go with Marv's on this one... the talent is there.

Y'all
As I'm writing this part - the games have already started, but I have yet to get in there to watch them... You may find the commentary getting briefer...

Hefe (1) vs. Schmen (4)
Schmen loves Jeff Garcia. And I would too this week against the weak Dallas secondary. Not to be outdone, Hefe's Gannon will toss 400+ yards against the weaker SD secondary.  Antowain Smith and Mike Allstot make up the Schmen backfield and it really doesn't look good here. I see both of these teams trying to play catch-up against this week's respective foes and that means air time, not run time. The same principal could pay off for Schmen's WR's though, as he has Curtis Conway going against Da Raidas, and Price will be the other WR catching balls from Bledsoe. Davis is a hot/cold receiver - who knows which guy will show this week. Hefe has his Raider - Rice, who, along with Tim Brown, should shred the SD defense. Hines Ward is solid, and pretty much always open. He just needs that QB to get him the ball. Robinson is a new player for Hefe this week, and if there is a chink in the Hefe armour it is in the third WR slot.
Too much Raida factor here - give the win to Hefe.

Shortline (2) vs. Hawks (3)
Hawks will start... Wait, no starters. Hold on - I'll roll over last week starters to see. Ok. Green, Dillon, Staley, Brown, Holt, Jurevicius. Not bad, Green should be throwing a bunch to play catchup to the Rams. Dillon is running against Carolina, Staley in SEA. Brown will be catching Gannon's tosses. Holt and Jurivicius should each be in high scoring games. Shortline has FFFFFAARRRVVE and George (where did he go this year?), Edgerrin vs. TEN. Bruce, Trina Glenn, and Muhammad. I see more talent on the Hawks side of the ball, but the Karma is with Shortline....
Give the win to Short on principle.

Toilet bowl - Woodies romps. (you don't have to ask why...)

What an ending to the regular season! The playoff schedule and homefield advantages are set.

The games that made a difference:

Bananas gets 8 points from Coles without a TD. He went 8 catches for 158 yards, and Mr. Marv's Porter only came up with 2 catches for 38 yards for one point. That's the 7 (exactly) that Bananas needed for the win and earns a spot in the playoffs, bumping One Man.

In a mistake that didn't really make a difference in the playoffs seeding, but did make a win-loss record difference - the lineup import failed to snag Schmen's Tampa Bay Defense start vs. Hefe. Without the defensive points it was a Hefe win, but the start was legit, so give the extra points and the win to Schmen. As I said, though, it made no difference in the playoff placing or seeding - just pride :)

Final High Point goes to Bananas for his 82 points
Final Low Point goes to Smoke for his 31 points.

So here are the playoff seedings -

Dude:
Division winner Cooks (1) will have homefield advantage over Bananas (4)
Marvs (2) will hold homefield over Squids (3)

Y'all:
Division winner Hefe (1) will have homefield advantage over Schmen (4)
Shortline (2) will hold homefield over Hawks (3)

Toilet Bowl:
As a reminder, this is a single game between the two worst records in the league, regardless of division, that are elegible, to determine the first pick in next years draft. As much as it pains the commissioners to do so, Up in Smoke has been declared ineligible due to his 3 "DOH"s as well as non pay-in of league fees (see Rules). Hence, this years Toilet Bowl will feature last year's Toilet Bowl winner Krunch with homefield advantage over Woodies.

We'll get some starters analysis as the starters come in.

Here's the scoop for week 13 -

The Fat Lady sings:
Cooks (49) over One Man (43)
Priest Holmes wins again. In fact, if you had a KC player on your team, you probably won. KC as a team generated 82 fantasy points. One Man needed the win to seal the deal, but has left the door open for Bananas who now has a pretty even match against Marvs, (see below) tonight. Unless Bananas wins, One Man is back into backing into the playoffs. Wow. Deja vu.

Squids (39) over Smoke (31)
Smoke finishes up the season with mucho "DOH"'s and a loss. Too bad, too - if he had paid any attention to his lineup the win would have been his. Squids is in the playoffs solid. Congrats Squiddies!

Woodies (75) over Shortline (34)
Woodies finally snaps the miserable 7 game losing streak when it matters least. Already out of the playoffs he pumps up 75 points. Would have been more, too, if he had paid more attention to the "rumour" that Griese was to start... (sound familiar, Bananas?) Shortline's players took the week off in preparation for the playoffs.

Fat Lady is warming up:
Hawks (45+) over Krunch (25+)
Hawks has Tim Brown vs Krunch's OAK Def. Sorry Krunch, 20 points is just too much to make up, and you have to beat what Brown puts up too... Not that a win would have mattered, you needed Schmen to lose too, but:

Schmen (32+) over Hefe (4+)
Holy sh*t! what a week makes. Didn't Hefe toss up 94 last week? Sheesh. Sure Oakland hasn't played yet, but he'll need 28 points from Gannon, Rice and Shankakowski. Uh.. wait. Now I want to put this under:

Fat Lady is Undecided:
Marv's (80+) vs. Bananas (74+)
Bananas has one player to go tonight: Coles, WR, NYJ. Marv's has Mr. Porter, WR, OAK. This one could go either way.

I'll write more Manana - Playoff schedules etc.

See ya!
