Information to take with you

Obtain a letter from your hospital doctor and take this with you just in case you become unwell whilst abroad. Carry this letter with you at all times. It is advisable to keep several copies of this letter. Have a copy translated in the language of the country you are travelling to. This letter should contain:

  • The type of sickle cell disorder you have.

  • Up to date information about your usual haemoglobin blood level.

  • Information about any operations, complications or allergies you have had and how you should be treated in the case of a crisis.

  • A list of the medication which you should take regularly.

  • If you are carrying drugs such as pethidine, which contains controlled substances, ensure that this is stated in the letter from your consultant. This is very important when travelling abroad as some countries have different laws on analgesics. Try to keep all medication in their original packaging or boxes.

  • Any special treatment that you are having, e.g. regular blood transfusions. Also the type of analgesic (painkiller) which best suits you.

  • Your hospital number, the name of your consultant, the address of the local hospital/sickle cell centre of the country you are travelling to. For further information contact your travel agent
