Blob
Blob (Normal)Blob (Costume)

Real Name: Fred Dukes

Mutant Powers: Superhuman strength and endurance; "impenetrable epidermis"

Voice Actor: Michael Dobson (who also does the voice of Starscream in Armada and Energon, and the X-M:E voices of Caliban and Pyro)

First Appearance: "Mutant Crush"

Back Story: Fred "the Blob" Dukes had been working in a Texas rodeo show for quite some time as "The World's Strongest Teenager". It is unclear as to whether his parents worked there with him, or if they abandoned him there, or if he went there on his own. Regardless, he was soon confronted by Principal Darkholme/Mystique and asked to join the Brotherhood, to which he agreed. Blob will stay with the other Brotherhood members, according to Xavier's "future visions" at the end of the series, but they will all start working for S.H.I.E.L.D. at least within the next decade or so.

Personality: Fred, oddly, has two different personalities in Evolution: the personality he had in his premiere episode, "Mutant Crush", and the personality he has had since then. In the premiere episode, Freddy was a very odd character, seeing the world through unrealistic eyes. He was REALLY sensitive to people laughing at him, even if they're weren't laughing at HIM, just at something else while he happened to be near them. He also had a sort of demented crush on Jean, to the point of being obsessive. After Jean blew him off (and for good reason, as he effectively kidnapped her...), he became sort of a raging, rampaging blob of fury. In subsequent episodes, though, he's a bit more mellow, although he does have his occasional grunting/yelling spouts. He also has not nearly so much of a demented outlook on life. He's the "freaky fat guy", and he accepts that, albeit he's definitely not too happy about it. He also accepts that he's not too smart, either, and leaves the tactical thinking up to the others, and thus, he mostly just goes along with whatever's happening- he doesn't change the plot much himself, he's just the backup. He's the "brute force" member of the Brotherhood, for sure. He generally gets along with the rest of the Brotherhood members, especially Toad, as the two seem to be close buds. Out of all the teenage Brotherhood members, he's probably the most loyal to Mystique, who effectively rescued him from just being some sideshow in a rodeo. When he's not being pressured by others to beat up people or made fun of, he's actually a rather nice guy, as witnessed in most of Season 2.

Final Reflections: As Blob was a "okay, whatever you say" kinda guy in the Brotherhood, he really didn't get much focus. Even though I love Toad, he and Avalanche kinda stole the spotlight from Blob a little too often. He really should've gotten one more ep that focused on him to flesh his character out a bit more. But he's still an enjoyable character, and certainly better than the "classic" or Wolverine and the X-Men versions of Blob. Ugh.
