Abalone Street
A street in city Moruhan.
Alanha
A major trade city in Sorevv.
The Arch of Tears
A famed fountain in the city of Harava, and a bountiful source of water.
Blackrock Pass
A pass opening from Avrezin into Qenar, in canton Birechan. The main avenue of invasion (to Qenar) from the west.
The Black Wall
(I really shouldn't have to include this! *grin*) A wall that stretches along Qenar's eastern border, guarding the known world from the Ashen Lands wraiths.
blood-debt
A term used in the Summersea Islands to signify any debt involving a threat to health or life of self or loved one(s). In the Ashen Lands, it signifies a much deeper debt.
bonestalkers
A type of wraith resembling a spider's web with many gaping mouths. Qenaren lore holds that they may or may not be benevolent.
Caltin
A distant realm.
chufa
A Bereshi export. Call it "coffee."
The City of Tears
Another name for the city Harava.
The Concordat
A long-standing agreement that no nation will attack Qenar, because of her duty in guarding the Black Wall against the Ashen Lands wraiths.
"Conssaga Arigsarkisonir"
A tale of the rise and fall of the family of Lord Cons Arigsarkisson.
The Dark Mare
A goddess of death and renewal worshipped in some parts of Qenar and the Ashen Lands.
demons
Outside Qenar, it is commonly believed that wraiths are demons.
Drowsy Chrysanthemum Lane
A street in city Moruhan.
engineering corps
An important division of the Qenaren army. Their sigil is a wheel.
executioner
An alternate term for Qenar's high magistrate. It originated during the tenure of a high magistrate who carried out a great many executions.
Festival of the Bridge of Stars
Ezinen spring festival.
The Firebird
Sun-god of justice worshipped monotheistically in Sorevv and Avrezin, and as one of several gods in areas of Qenar.
The First Battle of Blackrock Pass
see events.
Gard Aharaz
The "capital building" and main fort guarding Harava.
general
A tirachen piece equivalent to the king in chess. See tirachen.
The Ghostwolf's Bargain
A legendary deal between an early Qenaren marshal, the Ghostwolf, and the Shatterer, stipulating that some wraiths will guard Qenar's law in exchange for a home there.
ghostwolves
A type of wraith, wolf-shaped with white fur and silver eyes. Usually benevolent in Qenaren lore.
guesthouse
The Qenaren and Ezinen equivalent of an inn/tavern.
House Tayya
One of Harava's noble houses.
jenachen
(Chedraqis) The Game of Blades, played in Qenar with jenachen (throwing) daggers.
"The King's Four Fools"
A song from the West, unpopular with the nobility.
The Lost City
Harava as known to the desert clans.
magister/magistra
A Sorevvan church office given to mages of high rank.
magistrate
Qenaren lawkeepers. The high magistrate is their one-person "Supreme Court." They are known by their black garb and the vaesjenar (see below).
magpie
Considered a herald of death and misfortune, though not a cause thereof, in Qenar.
Mahourza
A desert clan and one of canton Harava's enemies.
mark
Qenaren currency. See Qenar.
master of the hunt
A tirachen piece. See tirachen.
monks
In Qenar and Avrezin, monks take after the Asian traditions of martial arts and enlightenment.
The Nameless
A dark deity in some Western lands.
One-Eye
A pejorative nickname for Raesja Piromel, Avrezin's warlord (see People).
peace knots
Used to bind weapons when entering a guesthouse or a host's dwelling. A desert tradition, also practiced in canton Harava.
Perav
A small town in protectorate Moruhan.
The Prickly Rose
A Haravai guesthouse.
sandcrawlers
A snakelike wraith with six stubby legs and venomed claws. Often benevolent in Qenaren lore, and most often found near the desert.

Shalvi's Blades
A Western mercenary company.
The Shatterer
A shapeless trickster god worshipped in areas of Qenar and the Ashen Lands.
The Shatterer's Bargain

spellsworn's oath
Qenaren mages who are powerful enough to kill using spells are required to take an oath not to do so. They wear a barbed cross (the spellsworn's cross) to signify this. See Qenar.
stormbirds
Wraiths in the shape of cloud-colored birds. They summon lightning. Qenaren lore holds them as benevolent.
tirachen
(Chedraqis) The Game of Generals, a chess-like game played in the region. The Ashenlander variant puts more emphasis on rapid mobilization. See tirachen.
Tower of Bone
A mythical place of bargains with the Shatterer, rumored to be a white spire in the Ashen Lands.
traitor piece
A piece in tirachen that can switch sides. See tirachen.
vaesjenar
(Chedraqis) Literally "blood-blade." A shortsword carried by Qenaren magistrates, drawn only to kill (i.e. executions).
Viracia
A distant realm.
week
5 days in Qenar, 8 days in Avrezin.
wraiths
Supernatural creatures (like Japanese kami) that are said to be demons, spirits of the land, or living legends, depending on whom you listen to. Qenaren wraiths are known (in Qenar) as guardians of the law; Ashen Lands wraiths are universally known as a threat. The latter are swift and efficient killers. Magic-using wraiths are known as "greater wraiths" among the Ashenlanders.
