I

f Miris is anything like Cat," says the woman, "he will be...erratic. Brilliant, but erratic." She turns to Marika and says, "My apologies. There have been troubles of late, and my mind is on other things. I am Darra Ejien, and it seems Zerre has spoken highly of your abilities."

"What troubles?" she is about to ask sardonically when the last words catch her. She absently salutes even as she repeats incredulously, "Zerre said that?"

Rahen's laugh is almost a bark. "Griping all the way, you mean. But he frets over detail, and for one who deals with intelligence, that's an admirable trait."

She is bristling a little--Zerre is *her* commander, after all--but shows him nothing but a serene expression.

Darra Ejien's eyes upon her are inscrutable, as if she guessed the thought anyway--but then, magistrates are famed for that, trained to it, even.

Marika reins in her emotions until she *is* as calm as she looks--well, almost. The last thing she wants is for Zerre to hear she got indignant on his behalf.

He turns to Marika. "I've been in communication with Miris...before he went incommunicado without warning. He agrees with me that we need a base of operatives in Moruhan, to spy further afield. Would you be willing to participate in such an endeavor?"

She opens her mouth to refuse and hears herself say, "Yes." She must have meant to say that, she decides; it's not as if they could find many more people as competent as she is, and after all, she can't let down her commander.
