ahen nods, and for a moment Marika almost sees the shadow of sorrow in his eyes. "Thank you," he says brusquely.

To anyone else she would say, "You're welcome," in a flippant tone, but not this man. And not when something lingers in his gaze that could almost be regret or grief. And not when he continues talking so that she has no room for words, anyway.

"Yours may be the harder task. Nobody knows where the damn commandant disappeared to, whether it be some mission of his own--Dark Mare knows the situation's mutable enough--or grave, grave misfortune."

If it were up for betting, Marika reflects, she knows where she'd place her money. She's never known grave, grave misfortune to miss a chance to strike. Except perhaps when she escaped that foreign mage. Or when she managed to survive her first mission. Or when--well. Perhaps there might be some luck for the commandant after all.

Or, a darker thought squirms into her awareness, perhaps this *is* the grave, grave misfortune being more sneaky than usual. Ah well...if nothing else, the commandant should be easy to recognize. There can't be that many men missing their right arm and still able to play jenachen.

[GM's note: Common knowledge: Vanen Miris lost his right arm during Second Blackrock.]

"You've already said that," the magistrate says, though her tone is mild. She looks at Marika and adds, "There is a mage here who will be travelling with you, with the same purpose. He calls himself Lynx, and I can introduce you to him sometime tonight, after you've had a chance to rest. We're sorry for the short notice; events are marching more quickly than we can, and it's a disturbing feeling."

Her traveling companion. Right, she mustn't forget him. But...meet him tonight? Is that all the rest she's going to get? Of course, she's going to be thrown onto a horse as soon as possible in attempt to catch up with "events". "I've had shorter," Marika responds, realizes it sounds like either boasting or overeager forgiveness, and decides not to care. She salutes the two and thinks rather longingly of getting off her feet.

"Dismissed," says Rahen, and then, unexpectedly, "Try to sleep well."

It's all she can do not to snort. The emphasis, of course, is on the word "try".
