nd approach the person does, though in other lands, other times, this visitor might not have been called a person. Upon four legs it comes, padding softly through the underbrush, sleek and white and silver-eyed. A ghostwolf of Qenar...a wraith, and one bound by that ancient bargain to enforce Qenar's laws. [At least, so it is told in legend...and those wraiths who dwell in Qenar are both feared and respected as lawkeepers.] The ghostwolf stops and regards So Fooyan without wavering, then lifts its head and howls plaintively. Other howls, distant and dreamy, echo back through the woods. "I am too late, it seems," says the ghostwolf, sitting back on its haunches. "You were a survivor from the shrine?" "Indeed." It sighs, though there is nothing of human regret in that sigh, only the need for patience--and one who lives unaging through the years must know patience well indeed. "I cannot hunt the Ezinen back to their lair; they have passed beyond the boundaries of this land. But you are human, and bound by different rules, and if you wish to find the faces of those who wronged you, that is your choice. And otherwise..." It waits, watching So Fooyan intently. So Fooyan looks into the flames. Slowly, he speaks: "Not seeking to right a wrong that has been done would trouble theworld's spirit." The ghostwolf does not interrupt him, instead letting him follow the path of his thoughts to the necessary conclusion. "Nonetheless, 'When the water has passed the falls, there is no point inchasing after it. Drink from the water that is before you.' Actionschange not the past; I should look to what passes now. "Except... 'He who learns not from the lessons of the past will havethose lessons taught him again.' By inactivity, would the soldiers thenravage other sites of peace?" The ghostwolf's voice is sardonic. "It has happened before, in many a mortal realm. The world's spirit has been troubled many times, and shall no doubt be trouble many more times in the years' turning. And there are warnings to give, after all. We do not take place in your wars, but neither do we turn aside. This land is ours as well as yours, So Fooyan." "It is... a puzzlement. I believe I shall... sleep on it, so to speak."
