From: carter@teleport.com (Chris Carter) The following humor post contains minor spoilers for the Final Four and episode 1 of season 3, "Matters of Honor." __________ / _________ \ / / \ \ ------------------------------------------------ / ______________________________________________ \ / / \ \ / / \ \ \ \ / / \ \ ____________________ / / \ \ l------------------- / \ \ / / / \ / \ / / \ \ ____________ / / \ \ / / \ \ l----------- / \ \ / / / \ / \ \ \ / / / /\ \ / /\ \ \ \ \ \_____/ / \ \ / / \ \_____/ / \________/ \ \________/ / \________/ \__________/ What if... Marvel Comics bought the rights to produce future episodes of Babylon 5? Stan Lee, executive producer of Babylon 5 assigns Chris Claremont the role of head writer, and orders Chris to make some adjustments to the B5 story arc, in keeping with Marvel's tradition of great comics. The changes, which take effect starting at the beginning of Season 3, are as follows: The transformation that began in 'Chrysalis' has not yet reached its fruition as Delenn slowly continues to have her appearance altered by the Triluminaries. Delenn is, by episode 5, fully transformed into the Mandarin. She (now a he) takes up the rings whose power we have only seen a fraction of to date, (c.f., 'The Gathering') and uses them to instigate a reign of terror aboard the station. Sinclair hears of Delenn's bad hair episode through his Ranger contacts and is, for a time, driven to drink. But by episode 8 Sinclair resolves that he must fight the Mandarin's vicious onslaught and, with the assistance of a heretofore unknown friend who's big into the production of advanced combat armor, one Anthony Stark, returns to B5 as the invincible Iron Man. Episode 2 reveals that Lt. Warren Keffer is still alive, taken by the Shadows rather than killed during his hyperspatial encounter. However, his captivity on Z'ha'dum doesn't go quite as the Shadows might have planned. The creature Catherine Sakai encountered while attempting to survey Sigma 957 is none other than a partly dormant Galactus. After further disruption of his rest by passing warships, Galactus rouses himself and goes in search of a quick meal. Galactus' hunger takes him to Z'ha'dum, where he shrugs off an attack by the Shadows, consumes the planet, and rescues Keffer. Keffer's gratitude so overwhelms Galactus, (!) that the monstrous being bestows incredible powers on the young Lieutenant, making Keffer the Herald of Galactus, the Silver Surfer. Meanwhile, back on the station, G'Kar is explaining to another intrepid scout the dangers of piloting a ship to Sigma 957. G'Kar demonstrates the scale of the creature at Sigma 957 by comparing himself not with an ant, as in the Season 1 episode, 'Mind War,' but with a spider. G'Kar, not wearing his gloves as is his usual custom, is bitten by the spider. What is unknown at the time of the bite is that the spider was recently exposed to highly concentrated radiation from the rare element, "Quantium-40." This radiation, combined with the spider's venom, enters G'Kar's bloodstream and renders him unconscious a short while after the bite occurs. Upon awakening, G'Kar finds himself endowed with greatly increased strength, agility, a bizarre ability to stick to surfaces, and an ability to sense danger seconds before the threatening event occurs. After some thoughtful costume design and a bit chemistry work to create a formula for artificial webbing, G'Kar reveals a new hero to join the battle against Centauri oppression; your friendly neighborhood webslinging wallcrawler, SpiderNarn. Talia Winters is returning to Earth from a brief stay on Mars in episode 4, aboard an Earthforce light transport. The only other occupants of the ship are the young Ensign John Storm, Gunnery Sergeant Benjamin J. Grimm, and the pilot, Commander Reed Richards. Richards was expecting this to be nothing more that a 'coffee-and-cake' run, but as the ship approaches Earth, it is bombarded with cosmic radiation. The transport crashlands, a disastrous impact only barely averted by Richards' timely return to consciousness. As he recovers the dormant forms of the passengers, Richards discovers that his body has acquired the ability to become extremely elastic. While theorizing on the nature of the radiation their ship encountered, the others awaken to find themselves experiencing the effects of the cosmic rays as well. Ensign Storm's body bursts into flame. Gunny Grimm grows to considerably greater size, and his skin becomes an exoskeleton made of something very much in keeping with stone. Talia's transformation is much more unusual. The cosmic radiation has affected her mind, banishing the sleeper personality and allowing the original Talia (who wasn't really destroyed) to return. Also, Talia's telekinetic powers are enhanced considerably, and she gains the ability to render herself, or other objects or people, invisible by using her telekinetic capacity to warp light. The group decides to form a bond among themselves, and they become the Fantastic Four. Recent exposure to telepathic contact has an unforeseen effect on Commander Ivanova, also during episode 4. While she thought she was merely a latent telepath, in reality Ivanova is an Inhuman, one of a genetic stock that diverged from normal human evolution in ages past. The telepathic contact awakens Ivanova's Inhuman powers, causing her hair to become a living thing, able to be controlled by by the merest thought. The Commander's hair also becomes extremely strong, resilient, and can grow or shorten at her will. Commander Ivanova is... Medusa. Bureau 13 isn't simply a conspiracy of psi-endowed extremists. The Bureau is, in truth, a pro-mutant group whose intention is to dominate the world and subjugate normal humans at any cost. The Bureau intends to install a ruling class of psionics, with other mutants as enforcers of the Bureau's edicts. The current leader of Bureau 13 is a very powerful telepath who is known to a few only by the codename, 'Phoenix.' To even fewer, Phoenix is known to be the descendant of Magneto and Jean Grey from a divergent timeline. Phoenix first appeared at the PsiCorps experimental facility at Syria Plenum, Mars, during the Corps' early attempts to produce viable time travel via psi-powers. After proving her worth to the telepaths on Mars, she quickly rose to a high position in PsiCorps, and used that position to surround herself with conspirators whose likemindedness regarding the fate of mutants and humans became the birth of Bureau 13. Marcus Cole, a Ranger and new recurring character, isn't just handy with a quarterstaff. He can shuffle a pretty mean deck of cards too, when it's discovered that Cole is just a cover identity for the mutant, Gambit. Why haven't we seen anything of N'Grath for so long? He's been 'replaced' as the overlord of B5's criminal underworld by none other than Wilson Fisk, a descendant of the original Kingpin of Crime. It is learned, to the great surprise of the major races, that the Earth Alliance was actually responsible for the destruction of the Dilgar sun, which wiped out the species originating from that world. And who was the agent the EA dispatched to pull off this seemingly impossible feat? None other than a man called Nova. Ever since assembling Garibaldi's motorcycle, Lennier has felt an increasing attachment to it. In episode 17, this attachment comes to its ultimate end as Lennier, while riding the bike through Level 13 of Grey section, is assailed by incomprehensible forces. At last, Lennier realizes his true destiny as he assumes the appearance and powers of Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance. Captain Sheridan investigates the remains of a transport that may have been destroyed by Shadows in episode 8. In the wreckage Sheridan finds the walking stick used to heinous effect by Sebastian, the Vorlon's Inquisitor. While this seems to confirm that the ship was attacked by Shadows bent on hindering the Inquisitor from fulfilling his purpose, (permanently) Sheridan is left holding the walking stick, and a great many questions. By the time the Captain has returned to the station, the cane has undergone a strange reshaping, completely without Sheridan's intervention, into a gnarled, brown stick, devoid of ornament or decoration. Sheridan is at once frustrated and made more curious about its nature, and resolves to experiment with the stick at once. In his quarters, Sheridan attempts to recreate the effects generated by Sebastian's use of the cane by striking it against the floor. The Captain gets vastly more than he bargained for, though, as the stick, now free of the fell influence of Sebastian, reassumes its true shape and purpose. Lightning strikes from nowhere, and the stick sheds its humbler from to become Mjolnir, greatest of the weapons of the Asgardian Gods. And Sheridan, recognized by Mjolnir as one who is pure and true of heart, lifts the hammer amidst the conflagration to become the mighty Thor, once protector of Midgard, now defender of the galaxy. Further changes will be forthcoming as development on Babylon 5's 'new look' progresses. Back
