From: M195722@sl1001.mdc.com (Dan Dassow) To: nathan@cco.caltech.edu Subject: Which Pets Would B5 Characters Choose? (Recap #5) Which Pets and/or Plant Would B5 Characters Choose to Own or Become? (Recap #5) -- 14-Jun-1995 00:53:25 GMT The pet that a person chooses reveals a lot about a person. Since Babylon 5 would not have room for pets, one could speculate what pet a given character would have chosen if they were not on Babylon 5. Here are my initial ideas with a recap of other contributors' ideas. Note: the punsters, following this thread, have also been suitably rewarded. Those so inclined may also speculate what kind of plant or tree a given character would own or be; I'm certain that the ISN reporter from "And Now for a Word" would be very interested in the answers to all these questions. :-) [5] B5 Character Pet Contributor -------------------------------- -------------------- ---------------- Commander Jeffrey Sinclair -- English Sheep Dog -- Newfoundland Jim Shupe Captain John Sheridan -- Labrador Retriever -- Ferret [12] Dennis O'Connor -- Cheshire Cat Steven N Orso -- German Shepherd Jim Shupe Commander Susan Ivanova -- Black Cat -- Ferret [12] Kate Cunningham/ Ailsa Murphy -- Russian Blue Deborah R Fuller -- None Dennis O'Connor -- Russian Sable Steven N Orso -- Puma [11] Jim Shupe Security Chief Michael Garibaldi -- Blood Hound -- Definitely a mutt J. [2] The B5 animal shelter has this cute little baby skunk [4] for adoption. Anyone interested may call 1-800-55-Le'Pew. [3] Believe it or not, a vole is a real animal. From the American Heritage Dictionary, p. 1436: Vole n. Any of various rodents of the genus Microtus and related genera, resembling rats or mice but having a relatively short tail. [Earlier volemouse, "field mouse," from Norwegian vol, field, from Old Norse vollr. See welt- in appendix.*] >From the picture, a vole looks very cute, about the size of ones thumb. [4] Note JMS: Spacing a cute little baby skunk would be considered a most odorous act. [5] eclipse@ix.netcom.com (Brian McCullough) wrote on 4 Jun 1995: 08:59:40 GMT ... Stay tuned, folks. Next up, Barbara Walters will ask the B5 cast and crew what kind of a tree they'd be ... sheesh. [6] Dusty Reichwein wrote on 4 Jun 1995 03:46:11 GMT: I'm sorry to disappoint you all, but your picks are WRONG! EVERYONE would pick HEDGEHOGS! Hedgehogs rule! The hedgehogs are going to conquer the universe!!! (maniacal laughter). "Kill the Vorlons! The Shadows are our Friends." [7] s007jrd@alpha.wright.edu (JONATHAN DEMERS) wrote on 2 Jun 1995 17:02:00 GMT: Come on, A black widow for Morden? How about a brown recluse...far more deadly, and not nearly as openly poisonous. [8] bwatson@utkvx.utk.edu wrote on Fri, 2 Jun 95 11:05:07 +400: Well Morden would have a MALE B.W.S. Why? Because when the female B.W.S. is finished mating with the male, she kills him. :) [... by chewing off his head and eats him. This is believed by people who study arachnids (spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks) to guarantee the female B.W.S. sufficient food to lay her eggs.] You don't think they'll let Morden live with what he knows do you? [9] CRAWFORD@UGA.CC.UGA.EDU (Larry Crawford) wrote on Sun, 04 Jun 95 10:58:06 EDT: Don't know about trees, but I think the Shadows would be kudzu. It moves when you're not looking at it. :-) [10] ALI00MJM@unccvm.uncc.edu (Meredith) wrote on Fri, 02 Jun 95 18:04:30 EST: I really like the suggestion that Delenn would have an Abyssinian cat. The breed is graceful, playful, beautiful, and these cats are very self-possessed and strong-minded. I have a Somali, which is the long- haired version of the Abyssinian, and have noticed that he is highly attuned to what goes on in my head. He's extremely intuitive, to the point of occasionally seeming downright psychic, which gives him a sort of ethereal and spiritual quality. I don't know if this is a trait of the breed as a whole, but it wouldn't surprise me. [11] ALI00MJM@unccvm.uncc.edu (Meredith) wrote on Fri, 02 Jun 95 18:04:30 EST: I also approve wholeheartedly of the suggestion that Ivanova would choose a puma. Whenever I have seen them in zoos I've been impressed by their seriousness and efficiency and athleticism, and their sleek muscular beauty. Once in Dreher Park Zoo in West Palm Beach I saw their resident cougar practicing her hunting skills, then, when her keeper arrived, drop from the tree and basically flop at his feet with an adoring gaze. Then she stood up and gently placed her paws on the glass where his shoulders were; it looked like she was trying to hug him! I can well imagine Ivanova enjoying a pet which would give HER unlimited and unconditional affection/loyalty, yet which could turn on a dime and trash anybody who messed with her or was a danger to the ship. Hm, black cat was a good suggestion too, sleek and mysterious--what about one of the rare melanistic mountain lions? Yeah, a black puma! Why not? [12] Louis Doench (weegee@iglou.iglou.com) wrote on Thu, 8 Jun 1995 19:01:46 GMT: Since B5 puts together some of the best tributes to GOOd sci-fi, I think it would be neat for one of the characters, alien or human, to have an alien pet of some sort, perhaps an intelligent one. I like the ferret idea. bbaxter@cais3.cais.com (Beth Baxter) added on 12 Jun 1995 17:20:15 GMT: Oooh me too, me too. But I gotta tell ya. They're only intelligent when it suits them, and that isn't very often. Also, they're *extremely* cute, which jms would never tolerate. After all, he does mention them from time to time :) (see book 1: Voices) [14] straczynski@genie.geis.com wrote on 13 Jun 1995 05:18:56 -0400: > If something happens to me...nobody gets the notes.
