Personal Information
Ilya is engaged to Lt. Erin Flannery, the head nurse on the Iliad. They have tried several times to get married, but each time, their lives as Starfleet officers have gotten in the way. Ilya speaks his mind and everyone always knows where they stand with him. No one ever has to wonder what he is thinking. He likes music, though has little time to enjoy it, but has a great dislike for holodecks. He uses them only as a quiet place to retreat, but none of the programs he runs have any holographic people in them. While he will attend parties that are given on the holodeck, he refuses to interact with any holographic images and prefers to stay grounded in the real world, stating that there is enough in life that takes attention away from people. While he does have a temper, he never holds a grudge and can easily forget slights to his character.
Starfleet Record
Ilya himself is a decorated surgeon who has seen much combat, and decided to transfer to a scientific vessel and out of the middle of any war. (At least that's what he thought he would be getting into). Ilya is a compassionate man who resists many of Starfleet's protocols in treating his patients and is a pioneer in the field of stabilizing critically injured patients through unconventional means. He once was busted down in rank because he allowed an injured crewman to stay at his post. Though the crewman later was instrumental in saving the ship because he was at his post, Dr. Karasov's failure to order him to sick bay resulted in a trial and his ultimate drop in rank. He transferred from the Ahrens to the Pacifica, a scientific exploration vessel, where he was content with being a lt. commander, and later achieved the rank of commander. Was promoted to Captain upon taking command of USS Iliad. He is the proud owner of the Purple Heart.
Background Information
He trained all of his energies on developing new treatments for Klingon-inflicted injuries such as the agonizer and the mind-sifter, but he also served on a Klingon medical ship for two years before the Ahrens to find a cure for a Klingon nerve disease. When Starfleet realized that the cure he had found had the potential to be turned into a weapon, they demanded that he stop work on it immediately. Rather than let it fall into anyone's hands, Ilya destroyed the research in front of a Starfleet liaison officer who had demanded it be turned over to Starfleet. Research has been stopped on those areas, and Karasov has never tried to recreate the research. With a background of Russian and Irish, Karasov at times has a temper that gets the best of him and sometimes makes enemies in high places. He had hoped to "lay low" on a science vessel that has little contact with the ruling powers of Starfleet such as Admirals and other paper pushers.
Hobbies/Interests
Ilya likes to lift weights, but is not a fitness enthusiast. He merely began to lift weights in order to enable him to move patients easily and quickly in battle situations.
