AGNES MOOREHEAD
1906-1974
“The Invaders”
We all knew and loved Agnes Moorehead as Endora, mother of Samantha in “Bewitched.” In “The Invaders”, she is a woman living alone in what appears to be the boondocks. Suddenly, she is beset by tiny laser wielding spacemen. To protect herself and her home, the woman with no name does battle with the tiny invaders that is grueling and horrifying. This is one of those Serling plays on irony and a wonderful performance by the late Miss Moorehead. She is one of the few female leads in T-Zone episodes with no lines. (Quick, name two others.)
"Bewitched" and Endora will always be Miss Moorehead's true legacy. However, her portrayal of the woman with no name may be her true hallmark in the arts. The only actress on the same level would be Karen Black and her epic battle in the 1975 TV Flick, “Trilogy of Terror”. We must hold "The Invaders" and the performance of Miss Moorehead high in the history of television battles pitting women against the unknown.
