Jackmans estate was the final major council estate built in the town (mainly 1960s). Orginally built with two primary, one special and one secoondary school (Willian - since closed), the estate also has is own shopping area, pub, community centre, library, and sports field. The design of the estate is based upon the "Radburn principle" with roads and pedestrian areas separated, and large open area. Overall it is a remarkably successful development, for its period. Two private in-fill estates on the former Willian School and
creamery sites appeared in the 1990s. |
Letchworth - an otherwise small town in north Hertfordshire, England - is famous as being the world's first "Garden City", being founded in 1903 by Ebenezer Howard. Many social and planning innovations that we take for granted today first appeared in Letchworth. For more information on the town see here. |
