Course Description
The Ridge
The Chinquapin Ridge CC Course
is one of the most unique courses in the state of Indiana and the Midwest..
Located on the White River Elementary school grounds just northeast
of Noblesville High School, the runners enjoy an unusual CC experience
when touring the course. A completely grass course with split rail fencing,
wild flowers, perenials and over 150 newly planted trees greet the runners.
Plus, the course is dotted with the silhouettes
of famous american distance runners: Bob Kennedy, Lynn
Jennings, Steve Prefontaine, Jim Ryun, Billy Mills and Don Lash. Also,
large marker posts indicate accurately measured kilometer markings and
each 200 meter is marked by a smaller post. After the split-off
for the girls and boys the 200 posts are color coded yellow for girls
and white for boys. Finally, for the students and their science
projects, in cooperations with the Biology 2 students of NHS, twenty-four
native Indiana trees are labled with distinguishable posts.
Tour the Course
The starting line lies above a dry retention pond, near the northeast
corner of the parking lot. To the east stands an informational CC board,
and flagpole. Looking out from the start the runners will see
a gently rising terrain which sweeps slightly left as they narrow down
into a fifteen foot wide running path, bordered by the Jim
Ryun silhouetteiPassing the 400 meter marking the
course sweeps left rising slightly just past the 600 meter post before
angling left past the Bob
Kennedy silhouette Running around the "Kennedy loop",
which includes a triangle of wild flowers and ornamental grasses, the
runners pass the 800 meter marking before straightening out along the
tree lined Lynn
Jennings straight. Passing the Jennings silhouette, and sweeping
right again, the runners will pass on the opposite side of Jim Ryun,
before descending along the northeast wetland area and Pre's trail.
Sliding by the Steve
Prefontaine silhouette, the runners approach the 1600
meter marking and a plethora of wild flowers and flower boxes.
Now, the runners
prepare to enter the wetland loop. The girls will run this loop
once and the boys twice to complete their respective 4000 and 5000 meter
race distance. Winding thru the wetlands, the runners cross a 24
foot long wooden"Billy Goat" bridge, and rise to the top of "Buzzard's
Roost" a slight grade before sliding downhill next to the wetland area
and the 2K marker. Sweeping left the runners again pass several
wild flower areas and an old mulched trail before coming to the Outdoor
Education Center Arboretum. Sweeping through a zig-zag area and
driving right the runners get a great view of "Miller Knoll".Upon driving
up the "knoll" the runners enjoy a longer downhill before turning right.
Now, the runners enjoy a tree shaded trail (Lash Runout) to the
Don Lash silhouette.
At this point
the girls turn left and head back out on their finishing 1200 meters,
reversing course past the 1600 marker, Prefontaine, Ryun and Jennings
silhouettes. Just beyond the Jennings silhouettes, the runners must
negotiate a tricky hairpin turn. Upon completion of this turn the
runners are back on the opening six hundred meters of the course and are
headed to the finish chute and "Mills
Spint".
The boys must
complete the wetland loop twice and then duplicate the girls finishing
route.
Spectator
Friendly
The course is a highly visible for all spectators. If a CC fan would
like to chase after the runners there are several points along the route
which will provide easy access for observance and up-close encouragement.
Bring your running or walking shoes as you, the fan, can get in a good
amount of exercise if you choose to take the challenge. Also, if
the CC fan would prefer to watch from a distance or at a more leisurely
pace, they will find their experience quite satisfying. This fan
can watch the start and see the runners for over 300 meters as they scamper
off to the north. As the runners return 900 meters later,
the fan can witness their progress for another 200 meters before they
enter the wetlands. While the runners are in the wetlands, the walking
fan may traverse a 300 meter walk and greet the runners on the Don Lash
straightaway. Remaining here for the boys to return or heading out to
observe the finish when the girls pass on their first wetland loop. After
observing the boys completing their second lap of the wetlands, the fans
may travel back out to finishing straightaway and watch the exciting finish.
Improvements 2002
The 2002 and season will bring additonal improvements to the course. An
outdoor restroom facility has been completed. It also, includes a meeting
room for coaches. A challenging hill along the western edge of the
wetlands has been added to the course. Plus, a common startline
and finish chute now exists for the 3K, 4K, and 5K distances. A new and
improved three chute finish has now been installed to handle larger races.
