Speedwell Cave has several places where old ropes with knots tied in them were hanging down from upper galleries. It also had electrical cord not tied but hanging as if tied to assist one up slopes and formations. All of these ropes and wires were covered with a thick layer of mud making them all but useless. In one section there was a 20-foot log with foot rugs nailed to it. Some of the rungs were missing. At least one of the rungs was only nailed in place with one nail. There is no telling how old the log is. It was secured at the top on an upper gallery stalagmite with rope and not secured at the bottom. Here is a picture of Rita on the first rung of the log. After much begging, Matt and I convinced her to not go any further.
