Meteors: Cosmic Dust

Northern Arizona, USA has the sear of a huge meteorite. This meteor crater, Arizona, is between 40,000 and 25,000 years old. The crater is well preserved because the climate in northern Arizonia is extremely dry and is therefore little erosion. The crater is 800 m across and 200 m deep. It is thought to have been made by the impact of an iron-rich meteorite, weighing thousand of tonnes, which largely vapourized because of the voilence of the impact. The largest fragment that has been found weighs 635 kg. The Gemind Meteor shower occurs in the second week of December of every year. The short diogonal streaks in this long-exposure photograph are star trains, while the longer ones belong to meteors. The Geminds peak at about 58 meteors per hour on the night of 14 December.
