The Report Card: Dion Nash
From Cricketing Safari, by Stephen Fleming and
Nathan Astle, Hodder Moa Beckett, 2001, p. 171
Huge loss to the tour party and me. He has a competitive
spirit that every captain looks for in his players and he
can turn a game through attitude as well as ability. Nashy
has a major impact on Cairnsey, which the team benefit from
greatly. A great example of his ability to make something
happen was during the second test in Zimbabwe when we needed
to take the last wicket to chase a small target and win the
match. The trouble was, time was running out. Nashy, who had
been very sore throughout the second innings, grabbed the
ball after tea and ignored instructions from the physio that
it would probably be better to rest, and demanded to bowl.
I let him go after discussing it a little more and ran down
to slip. He bowled the first one which was turned down to
fine leg for possibly two runs. Good fielding saw some confusion
and it was Nashy who retrieved the throw and then ran the
batsman out by throwing the middle stump down from 30 metres.
We all hope we will get the chanve to play with Nashy again,
as he can be inspirational.
