Bernice Mene's answers to questions from students
From Wick-ED website, 2002
Dear Bernice
What would you say to other people that want to play netball
for the Silver Ferns?
From Samantha
That you must work hard in trainings and games and in the
summer work on your fitness. Take on as much advice as possible
from coaches and always remember to enjoy it.
Dear Bernice
What inspired you to play netball?
From Gina
I watched my mother and my aunty play netball for years.
I started playing when I was ten years old as it was the only
team sport for girls at my primary school. It was there that
my height was useful and I found that I made rep teams and
loved playing the game also. New Zealand players were inspiring
also.
Dear Bernice
How did you get to where you are now?
From Danielle
I was lucky that my parents were sporty too. They both represented
New Zealand at athletics so they knew the training required
and the pressures that athletes were under. They were extremely
supportive and my two brothers and I were very competitive
in all games. Mum and Dad always encouraged us to do a variety
of things such as music and sport, and to work hard at our
studies.
Dear Bernice
How long have you been the captain of the Silver Ferns?
From Deslee
I was captain for three years.
Malo
Ever since you played netball, did you achieve what you always
dreamed of? Because I did and it is really awesome and I think
that you are the coolest player because you try your best,
even when you lose you are still happy. I think you are the
bomb!!!
From Sheila
I did dream of success and representing New Zealand when I
was younger. I once watched the Silver Ferns play the World
Champs in 1991 and they lost by one goal. Captain Wai Taumaunu
was extremely humble in defeat and gracious. I will always
remember that. She had real mana.
Kia ora Bernice Mene
How old were you when you started playing netball? 'Cos netball
is the bomb!
From Charmaine
I was in form one when I started playing netball (10/11 years
old).
Dear Bernice Mene
Have you always loved netball and if you didn't like netball
what will you be doing? Would you be an actor or a doctor?
From Joey
I would be doing something with languages as I love learning
and speaking different languages. I have studied French, German,
Maori, and a little Spanish.
Dear Bernice
Have you always enjoyed netball?
From Osana
Yes, I have always enjoyed the challenges that netball threw
at me! As well as the game itself and the people. I have made
many friends through netball.
