During 1986 (wow~ that was a long time ago) one coincidence occured that would end up ruling the music airwaves and grammies to be won. Well, now that I've got your attention, I'll tell you the story of how Scott Weiland met Robert DeLeo at a Black Flag show in Orange Country, California. They [Robert DeLeo and Scott Weiland] began to chit chat and discovered that they were musicians!!! As the conversation progressed, they discovered that they were dating the same girl- Michelle.

So, I decided that I've read enough stories on how the Stone Temple Pilots formed, therefore I'm putting one up. They're everywhere, so no matter what I say, there will be one that has a lot more infomation on this. This is pretty much a summary of everyone elses. So, it is my own, but not. Stop reading, and please get moving- you're wasting your time by reading this sentance I hope you know.
As time went on, Scott and Robert began to write and record songs. So, Scott and Robert formed a band, and called themselves Swing- and decided that they needed a drummer. This is where Eric Kretz comes into the picture- the local band he was part of said that he played too loud! So, Eric Kretz joined the band Swing.
They decided then that they needed a guitarist- and neglected to put an add in the paper. Robert took it upon himself and gave his brother a buzz- who was still in New Jersey working involved with construction. Dean being all cool moved out to California, and Swing was no more- it was now Mighty Joe Young.
Time flew by (with opening acts for other bands) and Atlantic Records signed Mighty Joe Young on April 1, 1992. A few weeks before Core was due out, they had a problem with having MJY as their name. Therefore, they needed to change their name, AGAIN!
They band did have some trouble coming up with a name for the group. Sometime, the band were talking about stickers they had as little kids. Scott (being big and bad) bought up the fact that he had an "STP Motor Oil" sticker. Another problem (Gee- thanks Scott!)- what should STP stand for?
The group came up with some rather creative names, like Shirley Temple's Pussy and Stinky Toilet Paper (which were out of the question!) Then, they decided that it should be Stereo Temple Pilots. As they confered with their manager, he suggested to change the Stereo to Stone. Stone Temple Pilots was now the name.
The album Core was released on time (September 29, 1992) and were to encounter problems that would either corrupt the band, or make them closer. What will happen next is whatever fate decides.
