What is Baton Twirling?
Baton twirling is a combination of dance and gymnastics. It is taught world wide. In Japan
Baton twirling is even taught in gym class. The sport is open for both female and male athletes.
It is more popular with the female crowd though. Baton requires a great amount of hand and eye coordination.
Flexibility and previous dance experience are also required in order to reach new levels.
I am a Baton Twirler
Baton twirling was never anything I thought I would ever be involved in.
I started dance at the age of 3 and I kept it up until I was 7. At that time, my dance teahcer
also taught baton as well. I would see the other girls go for their lesson after my class,
and I was so interested in what they were doing with those metal sticks. My teacher soon
after decided to quit teaching dance and only continue with her baton students. So I said,
"That's it, I'm gonna twirl!" And I did and still am to this day. Since then I have traveled
from coast to coast across Canada for the Nationals each year.
Cities I have traveled to with Baton:
- 1997 Edmonton, Alberta
- 1998 Saskatoon, Sakatchewan
- 1999 Vancouver, British Columbia
- 2000 Winnipeg, Manitoba
- 2001 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
- 2002 Muncton, New Brunswick
- 2003 Toronto, Ontario
- 2004 NEXT YEAR Winnipeg, Manitoba
The highest I have placed ever at a National level was 15. I'm dedicated but not as dedicated as the top ranked twirlers.
They devote their whole lives. I have school and a social life. Some twirlers perform walkovers
and other acrobatic moves that I am unable to do. So placing 15th in the freestlye event is quite amazing when I don't
do such moves. There was a total of 27 particiapants. Making the top 15 also allows you to move to
the second round. Which was quite an experience for me!
- Freestyle
- is a routine that is choreographed by your coach and set to music of your choice and style. Then a costume is
designed to go along with your theme. It is usually a bodysuit with a skirt and decorative
trim such as sequins, beads, and other material.
