This is not
Sim City! No skyscrapers and railroads in this old-fashioned sim; just
castles, knights, and the mighty gods above. Good (player) and Evil (CPU)
forces battle each other on a morphable landscape. You cannot directly
control your followers actions but you can suggest thing (build, fight,
gather...). Your objective, lead your good people to defeat the evil population.
Graphics: (5/10) The graphics in Populous
are simply functional. Nothing pretty. The sinister face that congradulates
you between levels actually has a moving mouth and a voice (though very
crude). If you're using Snes9x I suggest running it in "Kreed's 2xSal
Mode." It makes everything much prettier.
Sound: (6/10) The sound in Populous is barely
there, but it's pretty cool. The into music sets a nice mood and the in-game
track consist of wind and heartbeat sounds. It's not real exciting but
it contributes to the game's mood.
Fun: (8/10) A lot of people might dissagree
with me, but I think Populous is a blast! You need to level the ground
so your followers can build houses and castles. Once your society is thriving
your mana increases and you can cast earthquakes, leathal swamps, floods
and more on your enemies (but they do the same to you...). You can rally
your people together and create knights to battle the enemy, or you can
lead your population into the enemy territory for hand-to-hand combat.
The coolest feature is Armageddon, where all buildings are destroyed and
the populations engage in a last-man-standing battle.
Creativity: (8/10) Populous throws an inventive
twist into the sim/strategy genre. Your range of God powers give you room
to make different strategies. The thought behind this game's design is
really awesome.
Multi-Player:
Unfortunately no. The screen's not big enough...
Tips and Cheats:Full power: During game play,
press A, B, then hold Left and press R, A, B, X, Select. Highlight the
Swamp icon. It will not turn red if code entry was successful.
