First of all Agia Pelagia has got four beaches of its own. Next door to Agia Pelagia and within walking distance there is another nice beach, the beach of Lygaria. On a short distance just outside of Agia Pelagia there are two more beaches, more quiet, which are hardly ever visited by tourists, and they are the beaches of Pantanasa and Palaiokastro, situated between Agia Pelagia and Heraklion.

On the beach of Lygaria there are a few tavernas, a place where you can drink coffee or a cocktail and a supermarket. Behind the beach and on the rocks on the sides of the bay are a few houses. That's about the whole village. In recent years, however, a comples of luxury apartments (for sale) has been built here. I thought that it would have become a lot busier on the beach after that, but when I visited in October 2009 it was actually still very quiet. For fun or for a greater choice of restaurants you can to Agia Pelagia. The road that leads to this other town is lit so it is also possible in the evenings, and in Agia Pelagia you can go out untill late into the evening for dining and entertainment. It is a walk of about 20 minutes, up and down a hill. On your way you have nice views. Lygaria Beach is actually a bit of a place for people who seek peace and yet some facilities as well. A little bit of life but not too busy. An advantage for most people it is not far from the airport (you will not hear the airplanes though). If you like diving you have also come to the right place, because at the end of the beach there is a diving school.
