CHARLESTON AIR FORCE STATION NEWSLETTER WINTER 2003-2004 It appears as though it must have been a busy summer and fall for all of us because there was not the usual amount of notes and letters; therefore, the newsletter is somewhat shorter than it usually is but you are sure to find some interesting news in it. 2004 REUNION NEWS UPDATE WEEKEND OF JULY 16, 17, 18, 2004 BANQUET AND DANCING JULY 17 ELKS CLUB, BANGOR (right at the south end of the runway at BIA) $$$ FOR THE CAUSE Thanks to all of you who donate to the Reunion and Newsletter expenses. Harvey & Lydia Pechack Judy and Lloyd Egers Helen Stitham Mel Pridgen Bill Larrabee Billy Yarber Dick Farrington Doug Braun Larry (Mac) McClenaghan NEWS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY ....AND SOME FOUND CAFSERS Thanks to all the Reunion Committee for doing such a great job of holding this motley crew together. I had to missed the last meeting due to my being chairman of the Medway High School Reunion, which we held at the same time as the C.A.F.S. reunion. I had the occasion a while ago to drive by "THE HILL" on my way from Medway (via Dover) to Bangor. What a change! Dick Farrington Jan 54 - Dec 54 Medway, Maine ............................ ............................ July 2003, Thanks again for the great newsletter that you put together. The pictures on the web site came out great, was glad that you could use the ones I sent. We are getting ready to leave for Wisconsin (Harvey's home). He is attending his 55th class reunion. On our way we are stopping to see Charles & Irene Croan. Haven't seen them for a while. They are in Kentucky. Last spring we had a little reunion with the Hatts, Soileau's Amos's, Loveall's, and the Silvius's here in Florida. That was lots of fun. Enclosed is a donation. You all take care and again thanks for the wonderful work you all do. See you next summer. Lydia & Harvey Pechacek Orlando, Florida ............................ ............................ July 2003. Here are some funds to with the mailing. Our son Steve has returned from 7 months in Afghanistan. He has been on active duty since being recalled in Nov 2001. He is to be released in August so I get to retire again on August 9. Mel Pridgen Rocky Mount, NC ----------------------------------------- Please accept the enclosed donation to help defray the costs of the newsletter and maintenance of the website. The Reunion Committee does a tremendous job. When visiting my sister-in-law in Kentucky, I picked up Bill Becker in Cincinnati then drove over to Akron to meet Ron Carty from Pennsylvania. We were all at CAFS in the early sixties. I don't believe our mini-reunion would have been possible without the CAFS website. Also found Rich Ely, Larry Whitten , and found the infamous Airman's Club bartender Sgt Bill Maloney that also served at CAFS during the same time frame. Kindly tell Pauline that there is no need to mail hardcopy of the newsletter to me as I find it quite convenient to view it online. Thanks for your efforts. Larry (mac) McClenaghan --------------------------------- Enclosed please find a check to help cover some of the expenses involved with maintaining the Charleston Air Force Station website and mailing list. I was made aware of the website last year by Maurice Bussiere. I was a Radio Maintence Tech at Charleston from 1962 - 1964. I worked for Sgt Vanderhoff and then Sgt Yonkin. In 1964 I was reassigned to Cape Newenham AFS in Alaska. After Cape Newenham I returned to the lower 48 and finished my tour of duty at Palermo AFS, near Ocean City, New Jersey. I have just retired from Continental Airlines as a Captain on Boeing 707 aircraft. I live during the winter in Naples, Florida, at 3049 Olde Cove Way, Naples Fl. 34119. My phone number here is 239-594-9527. During the summer I live in Rockport, Maine at 45 Village Way #41, Rockport, Maine 04856. My phone number in Maine is 207-594-8573. I have managed to contact some of the people that I was stationed with and have made them aware of the website. Hopefully they will respond and there will be a good turnout for the next reunion. Please have me added to the active mailing list when it is next updated. Doug Braun 1962-1964 email dbraunski@aol.com Naples, Florida & Rockport, Maine ----------------------------------- Hi Joe... Found the radome.org site the other day and have been having a blast looking through the old stuff. Talked to Harry Wood, and he gave me your email. Said you were involved in a newsletter and some reunion stuff for Charleston. Wondering if you could hook me up. Was there from 1973 - 1979, shipped out not long before the FSS-7 was due to deactivate. I was a 30970A. Thanks! Garold "Gary" Evans "mailto:garyeveans779@earthlink.net" --------------------------------------- John Campbell formerly of Corinth was stationed at Charleston AFS about 1962-1964. We are working on finding his current address so that he will know about the reunions. ----------------------------------- Jim Gaughan actually found us! AN APOLOGY IS OWED Pauline wishes to apologize for being so late getting the newsletter typed. A lot of things have transpired over the the past five months dealing with both her mother and her husband being hospitalized, rehabed, and home-health coordinated. Greg sustained a fall resulting in a punctured lung and concussion in the immediate tally back in September and a broken hip nearly two months after the fall. Evidently the hip was cracked and in its weakened condition eventually broke. Mother who turned 99 back in October had bronchitis with heart complications. Pauline hopes that 2004 her family sees a lot less of those folks in the medical field! ------------------------------------------
