We wish there was nothing to write under
the title Environmental Pollution; but unfortunately that
is not the case. We feel that, ultimately, survival of humans
on Earth depends upon knowledge they possess.
Pollution has reached the stage where only a concerted effort
by every citizen of Planet Earth will reverse the current
trend toward an ultimate "eco-catastrophe." To make this concerted
effort, you need an understanding of the basic principles
of ecology and a knowledge of the nature of the problems that
threaten the biosphere. Our food chain is not McDonald's folks,
believe us.
Environmental pollution is the unfavorable alteration of our
surroundings, wholly or largely as a byproduct of mans actions,
through direct or indirect effects of changes in energy patterns,
radiation levels, chemical and physical constitution and the
abundance of organisms. These changes may affect man directly,
or through his supplies of water and of agricultural and other
biological products, his physical objects or possessions,
or his opportunities for recreation and appreciation of nature.
Note: In 1965, the Environmental
Pollution Panel of the Presidents Science Advisory Committee,
USA, produced this definition of pollution.
