I've seen the lightning flashing.....and heard the thunder roll....
I've felt sin's breakers dashing.....trying to conquer my soul....
I've heard the voice of my Savior....telling me still to fight on...
He promised never to leave me....never to leave me alone......
The Chorus:
NO, NEVER ALONE.....NO, NEVER ALONE......
HE PROMISED NEVER TO LEAVE ME.....NEVER TO LEAVE ME ALONE.....
NO, NEVER ALONE.....NO, NEVER ALONE......
HE PROMISED NEVER TO LEAVE ME.....NEVER TO LEAVE ME ALONE.....
Verse Two:
The world's fierce winds are blowing....temptations sharp and keen....
I feel a peace in knowing.....my Savior stands between....
He stands to shield me from danger......when earthly friends are gone.....
He promised never to leave me.......never to leave me alone.....
Verse Three:
When in affliction's valley.....I'm treading the road of care....
My Savior helps me to carry.....my cross when its heavy to bear....
My feet...entangled with briars....ready to cast me down....
My Savior whispers His promise....I will never leave Thee alone....
Verse Four:
He died for me on the mountain......for me they pierced His side.....
For me He opened the fountain....the crimson, cleansing tide....
For me He's waiting in glory....seated upon His throne.....
He promised never to leave me.....never to leave me alone.....

Never to leave me alone....
Janie West Metzgar was an orphan who was left on the steps of Buckner's Baptist Orphange in a potato basket. On her birth certificate it only lists, "Janie" baby girl. The last name of West was given to her by her teachers and the staff of Buckner's orphanage. She also had an orphan brother named Archie, that was abandoned at the orphange at the same time.
Her greatest fear as a child growing up in the orphange was being left alone. In her personal daily diary she writes that, "A great East Texas thunderstorm came up while I was spending an afternoon picking blackberries among the briars of a blackberry patch on the side of a treacherous steep hill. There was lightning and thunder like I had never seen. I was so afraid. I thought I might fall into the thicket and no one would ever find me. I so feared for my life. The wind gusted fiercely around me. In my helplessness I cried out to God loudly, 'God please don't leave me here alone.' Help me please, God, help me. Within minutes the clouds rolled back, the sun was shining and a rainbow covered the horizon as I made my way home."
Later in her diary, she was in "anxious prayer" in the Buckner Chapel. There as she prayed [her custom was to pray for hours] God promised her that He would never leave her alone. She wrote this song shortly after having that chapel experience, while treating the scratches from the briars that covered her legs.
