Segera Highway Motel – Tanzania – S05.19.489 E038.33.159 1 070 ft amsl

The motel has a lawned area behind the restaurant, which serves as the
camping ground. It was okay. The ablution facility was a little strange
– the shower is over the toilet – and one did not have a drain –
interesting. We met a German couple that were travelling Africa in style
– a Mercedes truck – a real beauty. They had already been down South and
were on their way North – heading for home. Good luck and safe travels.
We took a leisurely drive Southwards and eventually decided to call it a
day when we found a campsite halfway through Baobab Valley.

This campsite was a wonderful surprise for us! Firstly we met Bob again,
an Egyptian we had met in Malawi when we were heading north – it was
great to catch up with all the news and it was good to see you again
Bob. Secondly, we did not expect such a great campsite. Thirdly the
weather was excellent – just what we needed – dry and warm. We enjoyed
it so much we stayed for two nights.
The campsite is across the river to the Udzungwa National Park, and we
were able to do some game viewing from the Camp’s River Bank. We saw
buck, crocodile, warthog, baboons and what we think is was a Puku. We
also saw many varieties of birds.

Travelling along the Dar es salaam highway we came across this General
Tyre sign.

We were not too impressed with the means used to get the message across

Mbeya – Green View Inn – S08.53.778 E033.27.030 5 574 ft amsl – TS2 250

A very enterprising local businessman has built an Inn and campsite in
Mbeya. It certainly has great potential – he is still busy with the
construction of two chalets.
For a stop over we found it reasonable and convenient.
After much debating about whether to go directly into Zambia from
Tanzania or to go through Malawi, we agreed to travel through Malawi and
this time to take in the Chintheche Strip, as last time we where in the
area we turned back at Nkhata Bay. The border crossing was quick and
uneventful. We exchanged money at the border and feel we got a good rate
(MK82 - $1)
Nkhwazi Lodge – 03/11/02 – - MK200 pppn
Our hosts, Jim and Elsje were brilliant and we soon felt like we were
with old friends.
We also met with Greg and Maylin who have travelled extensively – 2
years with a motorbike and now they have a very smart Toyota pick-up.
Dennis has learnt how to play – boules! Sue learnt to make bread – at
long last!
