The Start  After our two year trip to Malaysia in 1998, we happened across a wall map of Africa and noticed that most of the
continent had roads indicated around it's perimeter.
Log 1 We left South Africa...
Log 2 Meeting with good company and making new friends. This is what it is all about. The views were stunning and the drive was well worthwhile. The fruit and veggies sold on the road up to the plateau were excellent. All excellent quality!
Log 3a The road conditions deteriorated very quickly, it is hard to believe that this is the main highway north.
Log 3b Headed for the Tanzania border. Spent the night just outside of Karongo at a camp site called Beach Chambers
Log 4a Whilst waiting(Dar es Salaam), their was not much else to do but to relax, sit back and take it easy!
Log 4b Whilst waiting we have had our fair share of rain – I suppose it should be expected, after all this is the rainy season! The rains are not quite monsoon, but not too far off it.
Log 5a Jambo, hamjambo? Hatujambo. Habari gani? Hapana asante and Toka are most useful
Log 5b Besides the trench – there was the added problem of mud, which was knee deep and very sludgy!
Log 5c All smiles at a job well done – thanks guys!
Log 6 We left at 6.30 am for the crater, which was a half an hour drive. We left in the rain and drove all the way in pouring rain – had we made a mistake in leaving today?
Log 7a As we arrived in Musoma we passed a guy riding his bicycle up the hill with the BIGGEST fish I have ever seen on the back carrier!
Log 7b ...and arrived there after finally crossing the elusive Equator (19h25) where we cracked a bottle of champagne and made friends well after dark!!!!
Log 8 Across the Rift Valley again!
Log 9 Uganda – the pearl of Africa!
What a surprise! The country is absolutely amazing! Winston Churchill was right when he described Uganda as the pearl of Africa.
Log 10a Nairobi – we have arrived – still caked in mud – but in one piece and with our vehicle – which is quite an accomplishment considering the circumstances!
Log 10b We have been sticking small flags on the doors of MR W of the countries that we have visited and they have been an excellent idea! They cause great interest with young and old alike. While at the hotel in Moyale a gentleman came to look at the vehicle, and when he saw the Ethiopian flag he bent down and kissed it! Amazing!
Log 11
(5 August 2002)
16th July 2002 or Ethiopian date 09/11/1994 we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary!
Log 12

Finally on the third day after leaving Addis we arrived at Bahir Dar – a pretty town on the banks of Lake Tana, which has 37 islands, which have monasteries on them.

Our time has now come to bid farewell to Ethiopia. This is a beautiful country with great potential, it is such a pity that the people are so entrenched in the idea of begging. It is with great sadness, that we are of the view that each time a hand goes out to beg, it makes the country poorer.
Log 17a

Next stop Djibouti ….

Log 18a

Asmara is like a small Italian village, filled with coffee shops and good bakeries!
Plenty of pizza places and good restaurants. We were amazed at how safe it was to walk around the town, day or night – it is no problem!
Log 18b
(27 August 2002)
The Sudanese are a very polite and friendly people. At the one camp they asked if we needed anything, water etc. We were then surprised by them bringing cucumbers from their field as a gift! Without a doubt the people of Sudan are gifted with the gift of hospitality.

The whole idea of our going to South Africa revolved around the element of surprise, so once we had landed at JIA we hired a cute little Corsa and set off to find our first ‘victim’ – Lynne...

Camping: Every now and then we happen across a real gem – this was one of them. It had trees, lawn, a clean swimming pool, and lots of grace and character.

Tony’s Coffee Shoppe – an experience of note! Tony serves coffee, tea, hot chocolate and 4 different types of cakes during the week. What we did not know is that Tony is a Chef extraordinaire and he was able to make a menu of the above, a metre long!
