Sesriem Camp Sossusvlei
24/01/03 S24.29.056 E015.47.872 2 565 ft amsl Campsite N$180 pn (8
people)(try and share) Entrance to Sossusvlei N$30.00pp plus N$20.00
per vehicle
We had a brilliant campsite all to ourselves we did not know what
the story was.
The Sesriem Campsite has a swimming pool, and air-conditioned pub! The
site is conveniently placed at the gate to Sossusvlei. It is advisable
to book your campsite as this is the only campsite in the area and is
very popular.
Dune 7
Access to the dunes is via a tar road, built by the Swiss! It was
strange to see a strip of tar in the middle of no-where! The dunes are
amazing, and the tar road does allow viewing without damaging the area
any further. There is a strip of road going to the vlei and to the dead
pan which is soft sand 4 x 4 stuff so be prepared!
Just to the South of the campsite is the Sesriem Canyon it is worth
taking the 4.5 kms drive to have a look.
Quite incredible Corrie found a viper cooling off in the shade!
Next stop Fish River Canyon but first a stop over at a little shop
just outside Seeheim. Trekker had been told that he had to stop there
for a beer. As it turns out this little pub/coffee shop is popular with
all overlanders we left our mark on their wall!
Fish River Camp Fish River 25/01/02 - S27.37.186 E017.42.868 2 325
ft amsl Camp N$140 per site for up to 8 people
The Camp has many trees, a swimming pool, and a small shop. The sites
were very comfortable. MR W decided once again not to start, fortunately
Trekker and family were on hand to help us push!!
Fish River Canyon
Beware the Fish!!
The Canyon was closed to hikers due to it being the rainy season and
there is a high risk of flash floods! As we could not walk to Ai-Ais we
took the 40 km drive to the town.
Ai-Ais site N$140 per site S27.55.231 E017.29.335 699 ft amsl
The area is very, very hot and the camp not nearly as pleasant as the
one at Fish River Canyon. We suggest if you are going to camp in the
area, that you rather use the Fish River Camp
Company for MR W
We took a short cut from Ai-Ais to the main road to Vioolsdrif.
The gravel roads in Namibia are in very good condition and are well
maintained, there are many countries in Africa that could learn from
their example.
As we enter South Africa, there is an air of sadness that our year long
trip is coming to an end. We have enjoyed every aspect of our trip
through Africa we have met people from 29 different Nations. We have
had opportunity to spend some time with the most amazing individuals. We
consider ourselves privileged and exceedingly rich by our experience.
